We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mike and Jessica Barakat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mike and Jessica below.
Mike and Jessica, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Our optimism comes from being around wonderful people. We feel so blessed to be able to work for ourselves, as husband and wife and have a family business we will one day pass on to our kids. We absolutely love getting to know the great people that come into our shop and being a part of the community. It makes our day to hear how people love our pies and the stories of how our pies become a part of peoples lives, whether it be a special event or a weekly treat.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are a small bakery that specializes in pies ranging in size from 2″ to 9″, cookies and gifts. We can make some flavors gluten friendly with 24 hours notice and will have new flavors of pies and cookies coming out in the future! Our mission is to connect the past and present through the tradition of homemade pie. Our vision is to share delicious pies in a caring way where guests are treated as friends and strong relationships are built around great products.
Our desserts are one of a kind. We get a lot of compliments about how it is easy to find many desserts, cookies, cakes, cupcakes etc, but homemade pie feels more unique. Having a bite of one of our pies feels like home, a real southern tradition!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
We would say three areas that have been most impactful in our journey are patience, vision and motive. Knowing why we wanted to start a business was our first step. Coming from two completely different fields (Mike was in the military and Jessica was in the wellness field), we wanted to find something that we both loved and could do together. We wanted more family time and wanted to work for ourselves. The next step was having a clear vision of how to reach our goal of having a family business and how to run it. Patience is always important when working on a big goal. When obstacles popped up, focusing on those three things were key.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We love collaborating with families for their life events. We also love collaborating with all types of venues. If interested in collaborating, please reach out to jess.barakat@buttermilkskypie.com.
