We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mike FatboySlim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem by taking control of my life step by step. I faced the reality of where I was, committed to improving myself, and built a consistent routine with diet and training. Seeing real, tangible progress in my body and mindset gave me belief in what I could achieve. Helping others transform and setting achievable goals along the way reinforced that confidence even more, it’s about consistent action, small wins, and proving to yourself that you’re capable.


Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Mike FatboySlim, a fitness coach and body transformation specialist. My focus is helping people take control of their health, lose fat, build confidence, and develop sustainable habits that last long-term. What excites me most about what I do is seeing clients completely transform their lives, not just physically, but mentally as well. That moment when someone realises they are capable of more than they thought is truly special.
What makes my approach different is that I don’t just provide workouts or diets; I create personalized systems that account for lifestyle, mindset, and long-term consistency. We work mainly online, which allows me to coach clients all over the world, and help them achieve real results wherever they are.
Right now, we’re expanding our coaching programs to include more one-on-one accountability, nutrition guidance, and tailored plans for people who want to see results faster without wasting time on generic approaches. My goal is to continue helping as many people as possible feel confident, empowered, and in control of their health.


If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey were: discipline, consistency, and self-belief.
1. Discipline – Having the discipline to show up, put in the work, and stick to a plan, even when motivation was low, was critical. My advice for those starting out: build habits slowly and focus on showing up every day, even if it’s just a small step forward.
2. Consistency – Results don’t come overnight. Consistently following a routine, tracking progress, and making small adjustments over time makes all the difference. Early on, focus less on perfection and more on creating a routine that’s sustainable.
3. Self-belief – Believing that change is possible and that you are capable of achieving your goals helped me push through doubts and setbacks. For beginners, start by celebrating small wins and reminding yourself that every step forward counts, confidence grows as you see what you’re capable of.
Ultimately, my advice is to focus on action over motivation, track progress, and embrace the journey. The growth you see along the way will build both your skills and your confidence.


Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Honestly, the person who’s been most helpful in my journey has been myself. I took ownership of my challenges, held myself accountable, and committed to learning and improving every day. By coaching myself, I developed the discipline, consistency, and self-belief that allowed me to transform my life.
I also learn a lot from my clients, seeing their progress, challenges, and breakthroughs helps me refine my approach, stay creative, and continuously improve as a coach.
And, of course, my family has been incredible, their support, encouragement, and belief in me have given me the foundation to take risks, stay motivated, and keep pushing forward.
