Meet Mike Kistler

We were lucky to catch up with Mike Kistler recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mike, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I believe it is important to have something to believe in. Because of this, I have never given up on my artistic endeavors. I shall take breaks, or have negative thoughts, but I always carry on. I also continue with music and art, because it fulfills me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a musician, and multi-media artist. I mostly enjoy creating new songs, performing live, and creating videos.

The band I play in has recently put out a new EP, a new single with a video, and a forthcoming album that will be titled, “In Plain Sight”.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities, or areas of knowledge?

One would be determination, you know, you have to believe in something. Have a goal or an idea to work towards. You have to be determined to get things done, and be organized, or else nothing will happen.

I learned early on it’s important to not only befriend people who run in similar circles, but support them. Support artists, and they will support you.

I also learned how important it is constantly be creating. Not everything you make is going to be amazing, so just keep going and you’ll create some wonderful art.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

I believe it’s incredibly important to know your strengths, but also work to be well rounded. For example I’m better at playing guitar or bass than any other instruments but I still play and practice on pianos or keyboards. I have also been learning to play drums. I have found by doing this, I understand music better and can come up with more interesting ideas.

It’s important to be well rounded, and constantly be learning. If you stick only to what you are good at, you can begin to stagnate and become uninteresting.
