Meet Mike Moore

We were lucky to catch up with Mike Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mike , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

That’s a fairly simple question to answer. I used to think that when in a room full of people (whether you know them or not) that I needed to be the most interesting person in the room. In other words, as people were driving home alone or with their significant other they would discuss how Mike Moore was the most interesting person they have ever met. Then I was schooled by a mentor 30 years my senior and he said this to me: ” Mike when you leave a room full of people or you just meet with a few people or even just one, you want them to say…..Mike Moore thought that I was the most important person he ever met. He focused on ME! Not HE!!!”
That was life changing for me

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Again this is fairly easy. Why? Because for me my life is not about what I do but rather why I do it. It’s the motivation. People do a lot of things. Most don’t even know why! If we can be honest with ourselves, I mean TRULY honest it will reveal who we REALLY are. What we do means nothing until we understand why we do it! For instance, there are some Neurosurgeons who chose that profession for a variety of reasons. They all DO the same thing….The What. However some do it because they want to feel more superior than others because of their profession. Some because they like the money. Some because they want to help others with their skill. And others are combinations of all. But if we truly examined the why behind the what no matter what the profession, skill, or anything we undertake in life? The why sheds a lot of light on our purpose in life. My purpose is and always has been to pull the precious out of people. Not judge the vile…..which we all have at some level. But where are the encouragers in life? Where are the coaches. The ones that care more about others than themselves. Where are the transformational leaders? Not the positional leaders who use The What as a tool for manipulation! WHY not WHAT

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

ASK yourself as I must do concerning any undertaking.
1) What do I want
2) What do I need to do or change to get what I want
3) What could get in the way of what I want and how will I deal with it?

Then ask WHY to the above!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

They taught me how to accept failure. How to fail with understanding and use failure as a platform to keep moving forward. Learning to fail with dignity is the key that unlocks the ability to succeed with humility. It’s clearly seen when someone loses and then blames the system, the ref, the opponent, anything but looking at themselves and asking the question….Did I DO all that I was capable of and what was required of me and then some!
