Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mike O’Hara. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mike, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from endurance and tough outdoor activities. I’ve pushed myself to climb mountains, trek dozens of miles backpacking, and bike-pack 100+ mile routes. Some of the trips end in failure, some end in reward. In the end, whether it was a success or not, I continue to return to it, regularly.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a photographer, California native, and avid adventurer with a deep passion for capturing the beauty of the natural world. My journey in photography began in childhood, when I would borrow my parents’ film camera to capture black-and-white images of my local town. Over the years, my love for photography has evolved alongside my admiration for the outdoors. Whether trekking, biking, fishing, or exploring remote landscapes, I seek to document the stunning environments that surround me.
What excites me most about my work is the power of a photograph to transport the viewer to a specific moment or place. As I review my images, I often find myself lost in their details, mentally transported to the very location where they were taken. My goal is always the same: to immerse the viewer in the scene and evoking a sense of presence and wonder. I hope that through my work, others will come to cherish and respect these wild spaces as much as I do, and perhaps even visit them one day to experience their beauty firsthand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a photographer who frequently explores remote locations, acquiring the skills to navigate challenging environments—such as mountains, deserts, and other rugged terrains—is crucial. It’s essential to have this knowledge before venturing into any remote area. For those aspiring to pursue landscape photography, I recommend learning the basics of map reading and researching the essentials required for safe and effective backcountry travel.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m seeking opportunities to collaborate with outdoor brands where I can leverage my expertise in landscape photography to create compelling product imagery. My ability to capture stunning visuals in remote and rugged environments aligns perfectly with brands looking to showcase their products in authentic and adventurous settings.
