We recently connected with Mike Ragusa and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I’ve always been into art for as long as I can remember, so I do a lot outside of the work I get directly paid for.
I love to photograph nature, both landscapes and animals, I take trips whenever I have time where I pack my camera and hiking/camping gear and I’ll pick somewhere new to go (national parks are a favorite) and I’ll simply explore while taking images.
I also do crafts when I’m home, leather working, metal working and play music (drums and percussion) to name a few and all of those keep me excited to create.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I like to think of myself as more of an artist than any one title, but I focus a lot of my time into photography, my main goals for what I do are to simply make people feel good about themselves and share their experiences.
My photography brand focuses more on people and their stories, that could be a wedding day, family photos, brand building for businesses, capturing live music. There are many ways it all links back to the amazing people I get to work with.
Even when I’m creating something that doesn’t have a person in it, like automotive, nature, or product imagery.
My goal and the core of my work is always to have a positive impact on someone within that and that’s what keeps me going.
If I made someone’s day a little better, I’ve made the world a better place.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Oh boy that’s a good question, I have a lot I could say, but let’s focus on a couple.
Being patient goes a long way, it takes time to build anything worth having.
Great things take time and a lot of them can seem like luck to people who aren’t willing to place themselves in a position to be lucky and wait.
Alongside that, is really and I mean REALLY listening to the people you work with or plan to spend time around, building understanding isn’t done by assuming you know what someone needs.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My mom.
She home schooled (unschooling for those who understand the term) me from the very beginning, gave me the space to make my own mistakes and supported my drive to turn what I loved into my business.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without her support.
