Meet Mikell Reed Carroll

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mikell Reed Carroll. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mikell below.

Mikell , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience developed as a young girl. I was the oldest of 5, raised by a single mom in a small town in Maine. We had no money and I faced many obstacles; poverty, anxiety, and most recently a rare disease diagnosis, that helped me develop into the strong resilient woman I am today. Resilience is developed through hardship and I faced and overcome many.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am an attorney by day, working for the US Department of State and pageant coach by night, the owner of Carroll Crown Consulting.

With 27 plus years of experience in Pageantry and having been crowned Mrs Maine, Mrs. DC, World’s Mrs Tourism, International Ms USA and Ms USA Universe, I utilize my experience and expertise to empower other women to find and develop their special gifts and showcase them to the world.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Grit, tenacity and audacity.

You develop these skills by facing hardship and overcoming it with confidence and grace and akways with the mindset you can do anything you set your mind to.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Most recently I was diagnosed with a rare condition, Avascular Necrosis.

To overcome this difficult diagnosis, I first researched it and then began advocating for myself to obtain the best possible treatment and care and then pushed myself to work hard to recover both physically and mentally.

During my journey abd while recovering from my first groundbreaking hip surgery at Yale, I used pageantry to motivate myself through my recovery and became the oldest woman to ever compete in Miss Virginia USA.

I didn’t win the crown, but did win the Community Service Award and learned just how far I could push myself physically and mentally in preparation.
