Meet Mikhael Yesyurun

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mikhael Yesyurun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mikhael, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

When I was little, I wanted to be a scientist, but I loved to draw more than study science. This continued until I graduated from vocational high school and studied visual communication design at the Indonesian Institute of Arts, but due to the economic situation, I stopped studying, throwing away my dream to become an artist. But that decision kept me anxious and restless until I finally went back to college two years later. I chose a fine art major and decided to get an art degree to pursue my dream again. Thank God for giving me guidance for all of that, and I will put in my best effort for this choice. Family, friends, and everyone who contributes are also the reasons I continue to live through all this.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

The most exciting part of an artist’s life is that I feel like I exist because I create something. I can channel my imagination into a painting, like creating my own world. Sometimes it becomes a challenge when I have an idea and try to put it into a painting. I sometimes don’t know what my work will be like, but the scratches and mistakes in painting are like mysteries and aesthetic accidents that make the work more alive.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think all of that is important and influences my journey. Quality is, of course, related to ability; ability without knowledge is useless. But it would be better if you also had a dream and a strong desire to fight for it and make it come true. For friends who are just starting out, there may be many challenges that make us tired and sometimes cause us to lose our confidence, but believe me, as long as we are still willing to learn and don’t give up, a good process will produce something good too. Apart from that, look for a place that will accept us; if there isn’t one, create one yourself. We don’t need to prove it to them; prove it to yourself if we can. The point is to believe in a process; it’s okay if we are slow.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The ones who really helped me were my family, my friends, and other artist friends. They told me about the world of art and how to be ethical and strategic. I learn from the journeys of great artists and adapt them to my way of being myself.
