We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miles Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Miles, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
The simplest way to answer this is by constantly being put in a situation that forces me to speak. The more you do a thing, the better you will be at that thing. But to be honest it was more than that, I watched other people, invested in learning the skill of communicating, I was open to being told how I could do better.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up in a large family and we are very close. Growing up we didn’t always have much but we had each other, which is all we needed for a good time. My parents are the most helpful people ever. They were always giving. Their time, food, money, even allowing many people to live in our home. Teenagers, families, adults, all kinds of people, if my parents could meet your need, they did. Z Some of that is why I am the way I am to this day. Always wanting to help. All that I do is centered around 3 words ‘DO SOMETHING GOOD’
I believe selfishness creates the world we hate, but when we intentionally do good, we create the world we love.
I actually just did an event titled “Speak Up Church” and it was amazing. The event was about helping people who go to church learn how to use their voice to create a positive impact. Then how to use creating that impact to create income. We did it once and are now planning to do it again! No dates for the next event have been released yet, but you can join the waitlist to get a discount once tickets are available by going to SpeakUpChurch.com
We will provide everything you need to secure paid speaking engagements and to do a great job giving value at those engagements.
Outside of me taking speaking engagements, I also teach how to write and deliver a keynote presentation. Many are scared to speak, don’t know how to prepare a talk, have no clue how to give a talk, or just don’t know how financially beneficial a talk can be (or all the different ways it can be) so I’m teaching all of that. It is super exciting to see people change and grow. To see stage presence grow. To see people becoming better in different ways is a privilege. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three Skills that helped/help me are things like stage presence. Which I got from dancing, singing, playing drums and being in church growing up. It allowed me to become comfortable in front of people and on a stage. This makes it easier for me to be a little entertaining when I’m speaking. I might sing a little, I might dance a little, I might take a moment to laugh at what’s funny. Stage presence makes a world of difference. The last 2 I would say are knowledge of the Bible and church people/culture. This knowledge helps because the Bible is probably the best motivational book ever. Easily the most quoted book. People quote scripture when they don’t even know it. Knowing this allows me to present and always have something motivating, encouraging, inspiring to say even if I didn’t take time to think of anything new. Knowing church people and culture allows me to see problems with a very specific group of people and provide answers. In my field, that is how you get paid. When people know that you know a specific problem, for a specific group of people, and you can provide solutions, pocketbooks magically open up. I speak outside of the church very often. But Knowing and being in church gave me a foundation to practice my craft and it allowed me to find a group of people to help without needing to search and study for who or how to help.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Good people in your corner can and will change everything. What you feel you can do, what you are willing to try to overcome, how far you will try to go, can all be determined by who is in your corner. So having good people who believe in me, who cheer me on, and who remind me “I got the juice” may have been the most helpful thing in helping me to develop skills and overcome challenges.
