We were lucky to catch up with Mimi Blanchard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mimi, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
When I first started as a graphic designer, I had no idea how tough it would be to make strong decisions when essential information was missing or held back. Thirteen years—and plenty of blood, sweat, and literal tears—later, I’ve learned that asking questions, doing the research, and seeing the full picture isn’t just about getting the job done; it’s about building something meaningful for both myself and the people I work with. My journey has shifted from focusing solely on my own growth to creating real, disproportionate value for clients like Serendipitous Corp., Maryland State Police, Crocs x Pleasures, and Universal Music Group—so that when our paths diverge, we both walk away with new knowledge, a sense of support, and a little more joy and stability than when we started.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a motion designer and brand strategist, helping brands and creatives find their authentic voice and define their mission—without letting others dictate who they should be. I’ve had the privilege to work with a wide range of clients, from CASA of Cecil County and the Maryland State Police to Google, Charlestown, MD, Frolic, and major campaigns for brands like Crocs, Sony, and Universal Music Group. Across every project, what excites me most is seeing the overlap: whether I’m facilitating workshops for nonprofits, leading public art initiatives, or driving rebrands for global tech giants, my focus is always on empowering people, building community, and delivering results that are both creatively fulfilling and measurably impactful.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Across every project, the most impactful qualities I’ve developed are the ability to deeply listen and empathize with clients and communities, a commitment to collaborative problem-solving, and the discipline to ground creative work in research and data. These skills overlap in every role I’ve taken—whether facilitating workshops in Charlestown, rebranding for Google, or driving engagement for nonprofits—because understanding people, working together, and making informed decisions are what truly move brands and missions forward. For anyone starting their journey, I’d encourage you to nurture curiosity, practice active listening, and always seek context before you create; these habits will help you build trust, deliver real value, and grow alongside those you serve.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m overwhelmed, you’ll usually find me sculpting cartoon characters—there’s something about squishing clay and shaping wild little faces that pulls me out of my head and into the moment. I also love getting lost in books like The Art of Wyland or The Velveteen Principles; diving into other worlds or creative philosophies helps me reset my own perspective and sparks new ideas. And if all else fails, I’ll be tending to my plants, because watching something grow (even if it’s just a stubborn pothos) is a gentle reminder that progress is slow, messy, and worth celebrating.
