Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mimiko Mao. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mimiko, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I believe that confidence radiates from within, blossoming when you recognize your own uniqueness and strengths. When you truly feel that you are exceptional, a deep sense of self-assurance emerges. It’s important to remember that perfection is an illusion; no one is flawless. However, you should have faith in your own distinctive qualities.
For instance, I often feel that I look good in anything I wear—not because I consider myself the most beautiful person or the perfect fit for a particular outfit, but because when I don that outfit, I feel truly radiant. At that moment, my confidence shines through, reflecting the belief that I am my best self.
Embracing the idea that nobody is perfect can actually strengthen your self-assurance. When you accept that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, it empowers you to celebrate your unique traits, reinforcing the notion that you are remarkable in your own right. So, believe in yourself and let your inner confidence illuminate your outward presence.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Due to my deep love for vintage toy culture, I have been collecting interesting toys since I was young. As I grew up, I discovered that old toys from the past hold even more charm for me. Compared to the newly designed toys on the market, I believe vintage toys can evoke happy memories from my childhood. So, I decided to innovate by incorporating the beloved characters from those vintage toys into new creations, thus establishing my brand, Cabbage Garden. By combining redrawn vintage doll characters with modern aesthetics that appeal to a broader audience, I not only integrate elements of vintage toys but also introduce people to adorable cartoon characters from the past.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that the most essential qualities guiding my life are kindness, optimism, and sincerity. These three traits empower an individual to face each day and every encounter with a positive and healthy mindset.
First, a kind-hearted person perceives the world in a more beautiful light. With a spirit of acceptance and empathy, they find it easier to connect with others and understand their feelings. This capacity for empathy allows one to navigate various situations with grace, avoiding harm to others, and ultimately experiencing a more enriching view of the world.
Second, maintaining an optimistic attitude is crucial for me. I tend not to overcomplicate things; I see most situations as having both positive and negative aspects. When I embrace an optimistic perspective, I comfort myself with the understanding that perfection is an illusion. By accepting imperfection, I open myself to joy and fulfillment.
Lastly, sincerity is a vital quality in my life. When you approach the world with genuine intent, people and situations tend to respond positively. It’s not merely about treating others sincerely in hopes of receiving the same in return; rather, it’s about recognizing that true connections often begin with one’s own authenticity. By being sincere, you create the opportunity for a similarly sincere response from those around you.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Throughout my journey of growth, the unwavering support of my parents has been the most significant influence in my life. They have provided me with unconditional encouragement for nearly every endeavor I wished to pursue, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
My father, in particular, has had a profound impact on me. At every stage of my development, he has been my greatest role model. I vividly remember during my university years, grappling with the decision of whether to pursue graduate studies. I wasn’t particularly fond of academics, and I felt conflicted. It was during this time that my father, at the age of fifty, courageously enrolled in an MBA program to study business management.
When he later shared that he was the oldest student in his class, I was genuinely astonished. My father exemplified the principle of lifelong learning, demonstrating that age is no barrier to education. Inspired by his example, I decided to pursue graduate studies as well, ultimately choosing to follow my passion for fashion. His journey encouraged me to embrace my own aspirations with confidence.
