Meet Mindy Kono

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mindy Kono. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mindy, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my work ethic from my grandparents—especially my grandmother, who raised me as her own child. She couldn’t speak Japanese well and was already in her seventies when I was little, yet she still walked me to school, pushed me through swimming from the age of two, prepared homemade lunch boxes every day through junior high and high school, and even took me abroad regularly so I could experience a wider world.

She also taught me perseverance. When I was bullied, she reminded me never to give up on school. When she wanted me to learn languages, she made me practice, knowing it was the only way I’d grow. From both my grandparents I inherited discipline, consistency, and values like humility and gratitude. My grandfather’s words—be honest, never forget gratitude—still guide me today.

Their sacrifices and lessons shaped not only my career, but also the way I live: showing up, giving my all, and never giving up no matter how hard it gets.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My work as a model and lifestyle influencer is about inspiring people to live their best life — whether that’s embracing personal style, staying consistent with wellness routines, or finding balance in everyday life. I share my moments authentically, from workouts and meals to daily routines, and followers often tell me that seeing my consistency motivates them to pursue their own goals. My journey blends fashion, wellness, and storytelling in a way that is uniquely global, connecting audiences across cultures and continents.

Alongside my influencer and modeling work, I bring over a decade of experience in international business, interpretation, and overseas expansion consulting. I’ve helped Japanese companies enter markets like the U.S. and Hong Kong, supporting branding, market strategy, and cross-cultural communication. I also provide guidance in interpretation, marketing research, and business consulting for companies looking to expand abroad. Recently, I’ve been collaborating with restaurants and cafes, and starting in October, I’ll be appearing at more events, continuing to connect with audiences and brands worldwide.

This combination of modeling, lifestyle influence, and global business expertise allows me to inspire, engage, and partner with brands and organizations seeking authentic, cross-cultural storytelling and meaningful collaboration.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Discipline and Consistency

The first quality that shaped me is discipline and consistency, which I inherited from my grandmother. She showed her love through action — never missing a day of waking me up, preparing my meals, and waiting for me when I returned home from school. That daily devotion taught me the power of showing up no matter what, and it became the foundation of my work ethic and resilience. My advice for others is to build small daily habits and keep promises to yourself — that’s how consistency grows into real strength over time.

Cross-Cultural Communication and Adaptability

The second is cross-cultural communication and adaptability. Growing up between Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English gave me a global perspective from the very beginning. I never stayed in Japan for a full year — my family made sure I traveled abroad regularly so I could experience the world and learn flexibility from an early age. My grandmother spoke only Cantonese to me, which ensured I became fluent, and my father encouraged me to explore life beyond Japan’s borders. These experiences taught me not only languages, but also how to adapt to different people, cultures, and situations with ease. Advice: Multilingual skills and cultural adaptability don’t happen overnight. Immerse yourself in new environments, push past the fear of making mistakes, and always believe in yourself. Confidence is the bridge that allows your skills to shine.

Authenticity and Self-Motivation

The third is authenticity and self-motivation. Whether in business, modeling, or content creation, I’ve found that being honest and true to myself builds trust and lasting relationships. People can sense authenticity in your energy, your demeanor, and even your smile — it’s often the first thing they notice. Advice: Grow within, stay true to yourself, and don’t forget to smile. That simple act can open doors, create trust, and foster opportunities you never expected.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

The people who have shaped who I am today are my grandparents, especially my grandmother, who became both my caregiver and my guiding force. Already in her seventies when I was born, she faced the immense challenge of raising me in a culture and language that wasn’t entirely her own. She couldn’t speak Japanese fluently, yet every day she woke up first in the house and was always there, waiting at home for me — steadfast, unwavering, and full of love. Her presence taught me lessons far beyond childhood: the power of consistency, the strength of perseverance, and the beauty of giving wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. Even in moments when the world might have felt daunting or isolating, she made me feel seen, supported, and capable of anything.

My grandfather brought warmth, optimism, and a quiet wisdom that left an indelible mark on me. Even in his final days, bedridden in a hospital, he completed his book, worked tirelessly, and faced life with a smile. He embodied humility, gratitude, and integrity — values that continue to guide every decision I make. From him, I learned that true strength is not only about achievement but also about kindness, patience, and leaving a lasting, positive impact on the people around you.

My father also played a pivotal role in shaping my perspective. Through his work and global travels, he exposed me to the world from an early age, fostering curiosity, adaptability, and confidence. He gave me experiences that few children receive: exploring other countries regularly, connecting with different cultures, and seeing firsthand how diverse perspectives shape the world.

Together, these three extraordinary people instilled in me resilience, discipline, cultural adaptability, and a love for learning. Their guidance allowed me to embrace challenges, pursue multiple passions simultaneously, and connect authentically with people from all walks of life. These lessons have been the foundation of my career as a model, lifestyle influencer, and international business professional, helping me navigate industries across borders while staying true to myself. My upbringing shaped not only who I am personally but also my ability to inspire others, collaborate with brands globally, and communicate across cultures with confidence.

Advice: Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you, and carry their lessons forward. Show up consistently, approach every task with authenticity, discipline, and kindness, and never underestimate the power of a genuine smile — it leaves a lasting impression and opens doors in ways you may never expect.
