We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mindy Mccombs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mindy below.
Mindy , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
As I was growing up, I always loved helping. I can remember my Papa taking me to get The Hardy Boys book set because I helped him with yard work for the day in the peak of summer in Southern California. As time went on, I learned to love the idea of getting a reward for working hard. It always gave my busy mind something to put energy towards. The moment I turned 15, I started working and have never looked back. It has always brought so much joy to me to bring excellence into everything that I do. I believe my work ethic comes from the continued desire to add value wherever I can. Watching others win is my “why.”
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I was raised in Southern California. I think that is where my deep love for the ocean and outdoors came from! My family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, when I was 14 years old. As I grew up, I realized how much I loved people. Hop in an elevator with me, and I will know your whole life story by the third floor! At first, I thought that was a strange characteristic, but as time has gone on, I realize that it is a gift that is unique to me. Every little piece, from college to current, points to the care of others and having so much fun while doing it!
Currently, I am an organizational leadership coach, team development expert, and artist manager. I love helping individuals and teams get to their full potential. I am passionate about teams achieving goals through creativity and fun. I love rethinking what is possible. Helping individuals/teams better understand their strengths and opportunities for growth and have vision for themselves and the organization is a win and will always result in making a huge impact.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 qualities that were most impactful in my journey and continue to be impactful are grit, a positive attitude, and patience.
Grit was crucial because it allowed me to stay focused when things were unclear or hit a frustration point. Grit comes from time doing hard things over time.
A positive attitude began with getting back on the horse I fell off of as a kid and always jumping back on. We have the opportunity to build something great with incredible people if we are willing to brush ourselves off and try again.
Patience was essential in understanding that lasting things don’t happen overnight. It takes time to build something. Being patient doesn’t come naturally, but can be practiced over time.
For those early in their career, my advice is to focus on developing these qualities. Cultivate grit by reminding yourself of your “why” when things get tough. Build a positive attitude by embracing failures as learning opportunities. Practice patience by eliminating a false sense of hurry that we have created. This life is a marathon, not a sprint. So, wins along the way!
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Making the decision to follow my dreams and start a new business has been such a wild ride. When it all began, I remember just casually reaching out to some mentors, then casually throwing the idea out to them to see what the reaction would be. To my surprise, everyone was so supportive, encouraging, and asked about why I had not started anything until this point. From there, it became a lot of late nights and early mornings, figuring it all out through searches and asking a lot of questions. When making a decision to leave the safety and security of a wonderful thing you have built to pursue uncharted waters, it is always scary. There are moments that I still get nervous about something and just remember that scary things can be fun. My faith plays a huge part in my life, so I also believe that it has allowed me to have peace in the midst of the unknown. I am looking forward to even more challenges ahead to ensure I am growing.
