Meet Ming Chi

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ming Chi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ming below.

Ming, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As an artist and creative professional with a background in game development and industrial design, I find that keeping my creativity alive is essential to my work. Drawing inspiration from my experiences at renowned studios like NetEase game studio in China and my involvement in projects such as “Justice Online” and “Onmyoji” has been instrumental in fueling my creativity.

Maintaining a sense of curiosity and openness to new ideas is crucial, whether it’s exploring the latest trends in the gaming industry or delving into the realms of science fiction and fantasy for inspiration. My time at MORE VFX and HuangFan Studio, where I worked on the science fiction film “The Wandering Earth” series, has exposed me to diverse artistic styles and storytelling techniques, keeping my creative spark alive and thriving.

I’ve found that establishing creative rituals, such as setting aside dedicated time for sketching and brainstorming, helps me stay focused and motivated. Collaborating with talented colleagues at GENUN Studio, where I currently work as an art lead concept artist, has also been invaluable in fostering creativity. Together, we tackle outsourcing projects for industry giants like Sony Pictures, pushing the boundaries of our creativity and innovation.

Additionally, taking breaks and allowing myself time to rest and recharge is essential for maintaining a healthy balance. Whether it’s exploring the vibrant culture of San Francisco or simply taking a stroll through the city streets, I find that immersing myself in new environments and experiences reignites my creative energy.

By embracing a mindset of continuous growth and exploration, I’m able to keep my creativity alive and thriving, ensuring that I deliver my best work and continue to push the boundaries of artistic innovation.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Currently, I serve as an art lead concept artist at GENUN Studio, where I lead a team of talented artists in the conceptualization and development of visual assets for a diverse range of projects. From creating immersive game environments to crafting captivating character designs, I thrive on the opportunity to bring creative visions to life and push the boundaries of artistic innovation.

What I find most exciting and special about my work is the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals and contribute to projects that inspire and entertain audiences around the world. Whether it’s designing fantastical worlds, envisioning futuristic technology, or exploring the depths of the human imagination, I’m constantly amazed by the endless possibilities that creativity affords.

In addition to my studio work, my team and I are currently working on exciting outsourcing projects for industry giants like Sony Pictures, where we provide top-notch art and design services tailored to their specific needs. These collaborations allow us to showcase our skills on a global stage and further expand our creative horizons.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about the future of art and technology and the opportunities they present for storytelling, entertainment, and immersive experiences. I’m committed to continuing to push the boundaries of my craft, explore new artistic techniques and mediums, and inspire others through my work.

Whether you’re a fellow artist, a fan of creative expression, or someone looking to collaborate on a project, I’m always eager to connect and share my passion for art and design. Together, we can bring bold ideas to life and make a lasting impact on the world of creativity.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Being able to adapt to different roles, projects, and challenges has been crucial in navigating the ever-changing landscape of the creative industry. Whether it’s switching between game development and film projects or mastering various artistic disciplines like concept art, environment design, and character design, versatility has allowed me to thrive in diverse environments and seize new opportunities as they arise.

For those early in their journey, I recommend cultivating a broad skill set and remaining open to learning new things. Embrace opportunities to explore different areas of art and design, experiment with new techniques and mediums, and seek out diverse experiences that will expand your creative toolkit. By embracing versatility, you’ll be better equipped to adapt to the demands of the industry and pursue a wide range of creative opportunities.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
In terms of broader challenges that the creative industry may face, one common issue is staying ahead of technological advancements and industry trends. With rapid advancements in technology and shifts in consumer preferences, creatives must continually evolve their skills, tools, and strategies to remain competitive and relevant in the ever-changing landscape of the creative industry.

Additionally, navigating the balance between artistic integrity and commercial viability can be a challenge for creatives. Balancing the need to express oneself authentically with the demands of clients, audiences, and market trends requires careful consideration and negotiation.

Overall, while there may be challenges in the creative industry, there are also ample opportunities for growth, innovation, and collaboration. By staying informed, adaptable, and committed to their craft, creatives can overcome challenges and continue to thrive in their careers.
