Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mingyue Qu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mingyue, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I believe my work ethic is deeply rooted in a combination of personal values, influential experiences, and the supportive environment I have been fortunate to have throughout my career.
My love for design and the creative process is a significant driving force. This passion fuels my dedication and motivates me to improve my skills and produce high-quality work continuously. When genuinely interested in what you do, it naturally leads to a strong work ethic. My early experiences with interactive installations and wearable devices taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Seeing the tangible impact of my creations on people’s lives reinforced the importance of dedication and meticulous attention to detail.
My education provided a solid foundation in design principles and techniques. It also instilled a sense of discipline and the importance of meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards in all my projects. I have been inspired by mentors and role models who exemplify strong work ethics throughout my career. Their guidance and example have been instrumental in shaping my professional behavior and attitude towards work.
Understanding that my work directly affects the user experience drives me to be thorough and conscientious. I am committed to creating designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and accessible, which requires a diligent and thoughtful approach. The ever-evolving nature of design and technology motivates me to stay updated with the latest trends and tools. This desire to learn and grow ensures that I remain committed and hardworking, always striving to enhance my knowledge and capabilities.
Working at Ezze Live, where teamwork and collaboration are highly valued, has also reinforced my work ethic. Being part of a team that shares a common goal and supports each other encourages me to give my best effort consistently. Integrity, responsibility, and a sense of duty are core personal values that underpin my work ethic. I believe in delivering on my promises, taking ownership of my tasks, and being accountable for the results.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a dedicated Product Designer currently at Ezze Live, where I lead a range of innovative projects focused on enhancing the live selling and shopping experiences for vintage and sneaker enthusiasts. My work primarily involves creating immersive digital experiences and integrating service design solutions to deliver functional UX and product solutions. Initially working with tangible products like wearable devices and experimental installations, I have successfully transitioned to digital product design, blending digital innovation with service design to enhance interactions and enrich user experiences.
What excites me most about my role is the dynamic intersection of creativity and strategy. Each project is an opportunity to merge artistic sensibility with technological advancements, creating designs that not only captivate users but also serve practical purposes. The process of turning ideas into tangible, interactive solutions that improve people’s lives is incredibly fulfilling. I strive to develop solutions that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, intuitive, and accessible.
At Ezze Live, we are currently focused on revolutionizing the online shopping experience, particularly for vintage and sneaker enthusiasts. One of our major projects involves enhancing the Ezze Seller Dashboard and Ezze Admin Dashboard, which have significantly improved our live-selling capabilities, resulting in a remarkable increase in seller retention and operational efficiency. We are also working on integrating advanced UX/UI design principles to make our platform more intuitive and user-friendly. By leveraging data-driven insights, we aim to personalize the shopping experience, making it smoother and more engaging for our users.
In addition to these ongoing projects, we are constantly exploring ways to improve the sustainability of our operations and the accessibility of our platform. This involves refining our designs to ensure they cater to a diverse user base with varying needs and abilities. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and can easily navigate and interact with our services.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities and skills stand out as particularly impactful: passion and curiosity, user-centered design, and collaboration and communication.
First, having a genuine passion for design and an insatiable curiosity about how things work has been fundamental to my growth. Passion drives dedication to continuously learn and improve, while curiosity leads to innovative solutions and creative problem-solving. For those early in their journey, I advise immersing yourself in various aspects of design, exploring different tools and techniques, and always seeking to understand the “why” behind design decisions. Engage with a wide range of projects, even outside your comfort zone, to expand your horizons and discover what truly excites you.
Second, understanding and empathizing with the user is crucial. This means designing interfaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, accessible, and intuitive. My work on interactive installations and wearable devices emphasized the importance of creating designs that cater to diverse user needs and preferences. For aspiring designers, I recommend focusing on user research, usability testing, and iterative design processes. Develop strong listening and observational skills to gain insights into user behavior and preferences, and always prioritize the user experience in your design decisions.
Third, effective collaboration and clear communication are essential for successfully bringing a design to life. Working with cross-functional teams requires the ability to articulate ideas, receive and integrate feedback, and ensure that everyone is aligned on the project goals. My experiences at Ezze Live have taught me the value of teamwork and the importance of fostering a collaborative environment. For those starting out, I suggest honing your communication skills, both verbal and visual. Practice presenting your ideas clearly and confidently, and learn to collaborate effectively with others, respecting their expertise and perspectives.
To develop these qualities and skills, stay curious and keep learning. Follow design blogs, attend workshops, and participate in design communities. Engage in user research and usability testing to build empathy and understand real-world user scenarios. Join team projects, participate in design critiques, and seek feedback from peers and mentors. Practice presenting your work and ideas clearly, and be open to constructive criticism. By focusing on these areas, aspiring designers can build a solid foundation for a successful and fulfilling career in design.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was fostering an environment that valued creativity and learning. They always encouraged my curiosity and supported my interests, no matter how unconventional they might have seemed. From a young age, they provided me with the freedom to explore different forms of art and technology, which laid the foundation for my passion for design.
They never imposed strict expectations but rather guided me to find my path. Their belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to pursue a career in a field that I love. By nurturing my creativity and supporting my educational endeavors, they helped me develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed in design. This unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping who I am today, both personally and professionally
