We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Minjung Ahn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Minjung below.
Minjung, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I always enjoy media and games related to my work, such as games, animations, puzzles, and LEGO. Just as popular animations and games continuously introduce updates and new products, I also want to challenge myself to bring something new to my tattoos. My artistic expansion started with these hobbies.
Even with the same character, the desired features and expressions can vary. This is because the points of attraction differ for everyone. Recognizing and resonating with those points, while incorporating my skills and color palette, has become my unique style.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Eden, a tattoo artist working in LA.
I want to define my work with the phrase, “Eden’s Color Micro Character Art.”
I have an exceptional ability to reinterpret all objects, animals, and plants into new characters.
I can also reimagine existing characters with more vibrant colors.
I experiment with creative ideas by combining and mixing characters that my clients love.
Since I also enjoy this cute and colorful work,
I believe that those who share similar hobbies and genres will appreciate my creations.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that the fundamental skill a tattoo artist should have is the talent for drawing.
Some people can render objects like photographs, while others possess a unique drawing style that sets them apart.
Secondly, I think the ability to adapt to different tools is essential. Whether using a pencil, tattoo machine, computer, or iPad, you should be able to create consistent artwork.
A basic understanding of the tattoo machine is necessary, as well as the ability to combine commercially available colors to create your own color palette.
Finally, I think having a sense of responsibility for your work and effective communication with clients is crucial. Since you’re directly leaving a mark on someone’s skin, it’s important to approach even small tasks with a strong sense of responsibility.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I found tattoos to be incredibly appealing because they allow individuals to express their unique personalities and capture precious memories and meanings.
My interest and talent in drawing naturally led me to explore tattooing after studying design in university.
During that time, I had the opportunity to learn techniques from the famous tattoo artist Sol Tattoo.
I also gained experience working at the largest tattoo studio in Korea that he operated, which I believe helped me grow rapidly as a tattoo artist.
This connection eventually brought me to Los Angeles, where I received an offer to be an artist at a new tattoo shop opening in the U.S. (@vismstudio). Thanks to this opportunity, I can express and share my designs with a broader audience.
