We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Minou Ataei. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Minou below.
Minou , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
It is not easy to explain your whole life in a few paragraphs, but in short, I wasn’t always the optimistic person I am today. My upbringing was far from privileged; I grew up with limited resources and little parental guidance. My parents lived on the other side of the world, leaving me largely to fend for myself. Although I had two sisters and a brother, they had their own lives and challenges. My older sister and brother helped where they could, but the primary adult in my life was my other sister, who is autistic. As a result, I found myself assuming a caregiver role for her, even before I reached my teenage years.
Throughout my life, I experienced many ups and downs and faced numerous challenges that tested my resilience. There were moments when I felt like giving up, a sentiment that persisted into my mid-twenties. The turning point came when my parents passed away, one after the other.
At that time, I was a full-time student pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist. I was in a toxic relationship, my father’s health was rapidly declining with no hope for recovery, my mother had just been diagnosed with cancer, and my brother was navigating a difficult divorce and dealing with depression and heavy drug dependency. It felt like everything was falling apart simultaneously. After my father passed away, my mother followed just four months later, and I was in the final semester of my program, struggling to keep myself mentally afloat.
Upon graduation, I felt numb and directionless, enduring each day in a state of emotional exhaustion. Each night, I went to bed dreading the thought of waking up, a pattern that continued for about a year. Eventually, I ended up in the hospital with a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, where I spent a week. The doctors were surprised I was still alive; my blood sugar levels were dangerously high, putting me at risk of a heart attack.
That week in the hospital gave me a lot of time to reflect. I realized that, over the years, my mindset and negative visualization were slowly eroding my health. I came to understand that if I had the power to harm myself through my thoughts, I also had the power to choose to live fully. It dawned on me that everything in life, whether good or bad, has an ending. This realization became a turning point for me.
Even in hard times, I succeeded in every career I touched. I was a successful cosmetologist, I am a great dental hygienist, and now I am the proud owner of a successful pet grooming academy. Even though I had a tough life and there were countless times I wanted to give up, something always pushed me to move forward. I guess I always had that strength within me, but it took a hard smack upside the head to make me realize it.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
During one of my toughest times, I wanted to find a way to distract myself, so I decided to learn how to groom my three dogs. I came across Wag My Tail Pet Grooming School and quickly found myself falling in love with the animals around me. With my background in cosmetology, I discovered a passion for making dogs and cats look their best. When the opportunity arose, I decided to take over the school and make it my own.
At Wag My Tail Pet Grooming School, we are dedicated to training the next generation of pet grooming professionals with a strong foundation in both technical skills and compassionate care. As the proud owner and founder, my mission is to create a learning environment where every student not only learns the art of grooming but also develops a deep respect and love for animals.
What makes Wag My Tail Pet Grooming School special is our focus on individualized, hands-on training. Our curriculum is designed to provide students with real-world experience from day one, combining classroom learning with practical grooming sessions. This approach allows students to build confidence, master their craft, and prepare for a successful career in the pet grooming industry. We emphasize safety, empathy, and skill, ensuring that every graduate is not only proficient but also a true advocate for the animals they care for.
What excites me most about our work is witnessing the transformation in both our students and the pets they groom. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a nervous student grow into a skilled professional or watching a pet leave our school happy, healthy, and well-groomed. It’s these moments that inspire me every day.
We are also constantly evolving. Currently, we are expanding our programs to include more advanced grooming techniques, specialty courses, and workshops on pet behavior and health. We have some exciting events and seminars planned for the coming months, including guest speakers from the industry and community outreach programs to provide free grooming services for rescue animals.
At Wag My Tail, we believe that grooming is more than just a profession; it’s a way to contribute positively to the well-being of pets and their families. We strive to create a community where passion for pets meets professionalism, and where every student has the opportunity to turn their love for animals into a fulfilling career.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as the most impactful: resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Resilience: Life can be unpredictable and challenging, and having the resilience to push through difficult times has been crucial. Whether it was navigating personal loss, overcoming health issues, or taking a leap of faith in my career, resilience has allowed me to keep moving forward, even when the path wasn’t clear. For those early in their journey, I encourage building resilience by embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. Understand that setbacks are a natural part of life, and each one has the potential to make you stronger and more capable.
Adaptability: The ability to adapt to new situations, environments, and roles has been essential. I’ve had to reinvent myself multiple times, from a cosmetologist to a dental hygienist, and now as the owner of a pet grooming academy. This adaptability allowed me to embrace new opportunities and thrive in diverse fields. My advice to others is to remain open-minded and flexible. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try new things, or pivot when necessary. The world is constantly changing, and those who can adapt will always find a way to succeed.
Commitment to Lifelong Learning: Whether it’s learning new grooming techniques or understanding the latest advancements in pet care, a commitment to continuous education has kept me at the forefront of my field. For those just starting out, I recommend cultivating a passion for learning. Seek knowledge from every possible source – be it books, mentors, workshops, or hands-on experiences. The more you learn, the more valuable you become in any field you choose.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to stay resilient, be adaptable, and never stop learning. These qualities will not only help you navigate your path but also allow you to thrive in the face of any challenge.
