We were lucky to catch up with Misaki Matsuda Lagos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Misaki, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I was born in a rural town in Japan and moved to Tokyo in my early 20s, where I built my life. Eight years ago, I found my place in Los Angeles, and that’s where I truly began to feel at home. I’ve always been ambitious, constantly striving to level up and find new goals. When my son was born 13 years ago, I gained a new sense of responsibility and purpose. For me, finding purpose isn’t something you actively search for—it’s a journey that unfolds naturally over time. That’s how I approach life, and it’s been my guiding philosophy.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a real estate agent with Compass/Getzels Group, working on both residential and commercial transactions to meet my clients’ diverse needs. My background in marketing has been a big help in growing my business—most of my clients find me through my online presence, while the rest come from referrals. I focus on understanding my clients’ goals and using creative strategies to help them succeed.
In addition to real estate, I also provide business consulting for startups, particularly in branding and marketing. With the support of my talented team, we help clients create strong foundations for their businesses.
I take pride in building long-term relationships with my clients—some spanning over 15 years. Their goals become my goals, and achieving success together creates truly unforgettable moments. My job is very satisfying.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Determination – . When I set my mind to something, I’m committed to achieving it. A little bit about me: I was enrolled in classical ballet at the age of three, training in a disciplined and competitive environment. It was tough—sometimes even extreme—but it taught me resilience and the power of persistence. Those early experiences built my mental strength and determination to never give up.
International Mindset – Being born and raised in Japan and now living in the U.S., I’ve had the unique opportunity to experience two vastly different cultures. This has given me a broad perspective on marketing, economics, and human connection, which allows me to navigate diverse client needs with understanding and empathy.
Raising My Son – Most importantly, I’m a mother, and my son is my greatest inspiration. Being a parent changes everything—it shapes your mindset and priorities. No matter how hard a day may be, thinking of him keeps me motivated and focused.
Advice for folks: My advice is to know yourself well. Everyone has unique strengths and imperfections, and understanding what makes you shine is key. Self-awareness is the foundation of self-branding, and once you embrace that, you can truly stand out.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve been fortunate to have many incredible people around me, both in my business and personal life, but if I had to choose, I’d say my best friend has been the most helpful. No matter how strong we may be, we all need support, and when I’ve faced the toughest moments, I’ve been blessed to have someone who was always there to listen and offer the best advice.
I’m also someone who loves to learn and grow. I’m always looking to improve my skills, become more creative, and apply new knowledge to my work. I truly appreciate everyone who has shared their experiences with me or taught me valuable lessons along the way.
