We were lucky to catch up with Missy Kirchstein recently and have shared our conversation below.
Missy , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from being resilient through the hardest and best of times. My belief is if I don’t have optimism, I don’t have much. I have to look forward to things because I don’t believe in looking back. The future is uncertain for any of us at any given time. But with optimism, I have hope. And with hope, I have dreams yet to discover and memories to make.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an RN, turned wellness and lifestyle coach/nurse coach. I left a job I loved a year ago to create a lifestyle business in the newest and hottest area of nursing as a nurse wellness and lifestyle coach. I call my business a lifestyle business. I am building it to fit my life, my dreams, and my schedule working for myself, but helping others achieve their wellness dreams as well.
My husband was injured in a work accident almost 15 years ago and was forcibly retired by that. So, we always worked around my schedule. Ten years ago, I had a diagnosis of adult onset epiliepsy- with no known cause. I also care for my aging and ill parents for the past several years. So, time and flexibility were keys to making a career work for me and my family. When transformational nurse coaching came into the picture, I knew it was the answer to how I could continue to work and help people on their wellness journey and be free to make my own path and stop working in the public sector. So, here I am making my dreams happen while helping people on their wellness journey. Missy K Consulting, LLC is my business where I do one on one coaching, group coaching, retreat planning, public speaking, and client advocacy in the wellness realm.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
authenticity, intuition, and leadership
Leaving a job I loved that I really felt I was made for, was not an easy task. For lack of a better statement- it takes balls.
Was I scared? Sure. Was I sure I could do it? Absolutley. When I make my mind up to do something, I will not give up. I trust my gut at all costs (intuiton). I pride myself in being authentic and honest to a fault. I believe I can be and have been a real bad ass leader in this coaching world.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
My go to is always focusing on strength. It is a way to create more confidence and resilience. It builds people up rather than making them focus on what they could perceive as faults or imperfections. People might not recognize or acknowledge their own strengths either. Weaknesses can be considered strengths at times too.
Focusing on strengths was crucial in my former role as a nurse home visitor with low income first time parents to build their confidence and desire to continue to experience and share that with their own kids.
In business my leadership, enterpreneurship, and business owning is a strength
