Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Misty Black. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Misty, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Let’s talk about failure for a second. It’s been my greatest teacher. Every stumble and every setback has been a stepping stone on my journey. I had no idea what I was doing in the beginning. I just had to jump and have faith everything would turn out okay. Roadblocks have shown me that success isn’t just about avoiding mistakes—it’s about embracing them, learning from them, and coming back even stronger. That’s how resilience is born.
Luckily, I’ve got an amazing support system. My husband and kids! They’re my rock, always there to lift me up when I’m feeling down. I owe everything to God who has led me every step of the way. And then there’s my tribe of author friends from all over the world —they’re like a second family, cheering me on through every twist and turn. Many of them I have never even met in person.
I count myself blessed with all I’ve learned and everyone I’ve met along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an international, best-selling children’s book author with 16 books to my name, many of which have been translated into multiple languages. I’m like a kid in a candy store when it comes to writing children’s books. Seriously, it’s not just a job for me—it’s my passion, my creative playground, and yeah, it keeps the lights on too.
It’s my mission to share the love and knowledge of picture book publishing with aspiring authors through my publishing courses, like The Get It Written Workshop and The Get It Published Program. Plus, I offer personalized coaching to help authors bring their stories to life.
I’ve been immersed in the world of children’s books for five years now. In addition, to publishing them, I design and format picture books for myself and other authors.
My next book in the works is called “Thank You for Sharing Your Sunshine.” It’s not just any old book—it’s a heartfelt thank you note written in rhyme, accompanied by beautiful illustrations, perfect for showing appreciation to those who light up our lives.
If you’d like to be a part of the launch, I’m on the lookout for some lovely souls to help spread the word about this sunshine-filled gem. Oh, and did I mention you’ll snag a free advanced copy?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I was chatting with my sister the other day, and I let her in on a little secret: selling books isn’t just about writing a killer story—it’s about getting the word out there. Marketing can make your stomach turn. I get it. Putting yourself out there can feel like stepping into the spotlight in your underwear. But even the most incredible book won’t sell if nobody knows it exists.
Another skill I have, thanks to my business degree, is a knack for budgeting that’s saved my bacon more times than I can count.
Whether you’re diving into the publishing world or starting any kind of business venture, you have to be more than just a master of your craft. Brush up on your marketing skills. Take a business and tax class. Don’t be afraid to invest a little time and money in yourself. Trust me, it’s worth it to give yourself the edge you need to thrive.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Are you a teacher with a classroom full of eager young minds? Are you a parent with little bookworms at home who can’t get enough (or maybe they hate to read and need a little nudge in the right direction)? Or perhaps you’re a budding author with dreams of seeing your name in print?
I’m here to sprinkle a little literary magic your way. From exclusive book launches to sweet, sugar-free goodies, I’ve got a little something for everyone.
