We recently connected with Misty Chapman and have shared our conversation below.
Misty, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I draw inspiration from many sources – travel, social media, community – to name a few. Anything that exposes me to the beauty of the world is relevant. Music, food, fashion, and so many other things cause me to think about colors, shapes, and lifestyle in general, and these all influence my craft. I truly believe in staying in touch with your community, and community has different aspects to it. Our community is obviously the immediate world around us, but it’s also our friends, family, and peers that may be spread across great distances. Understanding our communities’ lives and what influences them can lead to new insights that in turn influence our work. We have to know what works locally, but also grasp foreign trends to incorporate them into what we do to create something new.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The Tailored Brow is an intimate and thoughtfully curated brow studio that offers extensive brow services, makeup lessons, and personal on-site make-up shopping. From the moment of booking an appointment, every client can expect VIP service. The client experience is always front seat right next to the unparalleled brow craft expertise. Through working with the client and hearing their input, we develop a mutual goal that will lead to their ultimate satisfaction.
My earliest influences were Bazaar magazine and Kevin Aucoin. To this day, I have all of Kevin’s books in my library. Music later played an integral part in my life as I began singing professionally in bands, or with DJs and drum-and-bass crews. I was fortunate on a couple of occasions to sing in front of thousands and have worldwide releases. Because of this exposure and my own personal style, other artists, performers, and fashion designers took notice. They asked me to do their makeup and/or be the key makeup artist at local fashion shows in downtown Phoenix. It wasn’t until I moved to Manhattan in 2004 that I decided to go full steam ahead with a career in beauty. I began training under the groundbreaking brow artist, Kristie Streicher, at the prestigious Warren Tricomi Salon. I then enrolled at the Atelier Esthetique Institute to formalize my experience and become licensed.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Drive, passion, and discipline. The first two are inherent, but I had to teach myself discipline. There are countless distractions at any moment, so staying tuned into what your goals are can be a challenge. Passion fuels drive. If there’s no passion, you’ll have zero drive. Stay focused and stay open-minded. Don’t underestimate your skills, and know your value. Always accept a challenge, and do your best not to fear failure. You don’t know what you’re capable of until you try, and if you never try, you’ll never grow. Get outside of your comfort zone. I’ve done nails, hair, and countless other things in the beauty industry. This helped me zero in on my passion, which ended up being brows.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Learning to prioritize self-care. I can’t be productive with my work or care for my mother or have a healthy relationship with my partner if I’m not taking care of myself. You have to take time to manage your physical, mental, and emotional health, whether it’s going to the gym and staying active or maintaining your interpersonal relationships with friends and family. Your circle of family and friends is your biggest fan, and they keep you centered and grounded. They remind me of who I am and why I started on this journey.
