We recently connected with Mitchell Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Mitchell, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Born into a family full of work horses. My grandfather TR was a pioneer for the family by moving to California from Sioux Falls, SD in search of greater opportunity. He was a doctor in the Navy and transitioned to a successful career in medicine afterwards for over 50+ years as a family practitioner. That sort of determination has always driven our spirit and given us strength in applying yourself no matter what the situation. My parents are entrepreneurs as well, establishing tennis foundations for developing youth as well as creating multiple businesses including successful Sports Marketing agency and created one of the first online record stores in 2000 from a life long love of music collecting. Both older brothers have endeavors of their own, eldest Chris is VP Sales + Marketing for Great Lakes Brewing in Cleveland, OH and my middle brother Alex has had a successful career in Radio at CBS and Cannabis industry based in San Luis Obispo, CA. Being the youngest in a family such as this I’ve learned long ago that the amount of passion you put into something is not guaranteed a positive result but more times than not will be well worth the learning experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Lake Forest, CA. Been in Atlanta, GA ever since graduating from the University of Arizona with a BFA in Visual Communications. Happily married to my best friend in the whole world Jenny and have 2 little ones Norah (5) and Heath (2).
Currently working with a handful of cannabis brands such as Halfpipe Cannabis, The Georgia Hemp Co. and Sympleaf Sport CBD…developing their brands and helping facilitate with any marketing strategy, content generation and asset development needs as a Creative Director / Consultant.
My main side passion at the moment is a brand called EDEKET GOLF (the phonetic spelling of etiquette) which is something any player, new or old seasoned golfers can remember from time to time. The mission is to cultivate a lifestyle brand for like minded individuals and athletes through their love of the greatest game on Earth. Educating, engaging and evolving from the past while creating new tradtions for the future. No other sport can bring people together like golf. You can meet a complete stranger on the first tee and by the 18th green feel like your saying goodbye to your best friend. It’s the shared struggles, friendly banter and total chaos while being an somewhat relaxing release away from life…thats the beauty behind it all. Something that anyone of any age, any skill level and legitmately go enjoy themselves outdoors for a few hours.
I’ve had this idea in my head for a few years and started to make it come to life in early 2023. I was able to take the time to develop something that I am equally passionate about which is golf and graphic design. I originally started out reaching out and talking to brands, looking at how I could fit their mold as a possible Marketing Director in the golf industry but the reality is that I wanted to create something new that is a true extension of me. It’s honestly taking all my triumphs and failures through my career and throwing it all into a brand. I have been an athlete my whole life as well as an artist and finally connecting my passions and creative visions instead of always being somewhat divided. Ive been loving the ability and challenge to develop something completely on my own again while dipping into the influences from my roots. Started out scribbling on paper and designing shirts for my parents when I was as young as 8 years old and it’s now come full circle 30 years later by creating designs for my own company hoping to infleunce my own children with the love of art, sports and community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Staying positive and being an enjoyable collaborator no matter what project or obstacle is on the horizon. There will always be mundane pieces of the process but keeping your head clear for the time when you need to focus on creative that will end up giving legs to your idea or campaign.
Networking and overall communication is the key to any great successful professional in any career path but most definitely in marketing since it relies so heavily on messaging and psychological phrasing or cheeky verbiage. I’ve been able to make my way through the years knowing people who could benefit from my skill set.
Time management is a skill. Multitasking is an art. Always be ready to grind. Not every night is chugging a full pot of coffee and no sleep until the deadline…but through all the roller coasters I’ve found that being able to use my time properly always yields the best results. Understanding when and how you work best for the highest level of output. Doesn’t mean there wont be random hurdles or breakdowns along the way but we can’t unfortuntely get time back we can only make up for it by consitently delivering a well executed final product.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Just try to stay in a creative mind frame but take a break from the computer or vice versa. Normally painting or working on something with my hands allows me to feel more grounded and appreciate simple differences. Also the older I get it’s all about taking care of yourself physically and mentally. If that means drinking some water, eating a snack or just taking a break to go play with the kids or play golf in the AM. Once again all about the reality shift and doing things that keep you in a positive mood while taking a step away from whatever your currently wrapped up in.
