We were lucky to catch up with Mo Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mo, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I grew up in a family where honesty was a key factor in development. My mom always critiqued us without restriction and restraint. I was rewarded for perfection and my short-comings were analyzed for improvement. My self esteem is a result of knowing that failures are normal but your reaction to the failures is what sets you apart from others. Tough skin and tough love were the perfect combination or requirements of growing up in the Davis family.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a fine art photographer who specializes in weddings and travel. I’ve been photographing for almost two decades. My love for photography started at an early age. My job is interesting because it’s different every day. I have an opportunity to document the most important day of a couple’s life. As a film photographer, I have a photojournalistic approach to photography. My photos capture emotion and moments. I’m grateful for the couples who trust me to deliver a product that they can enjoy for years to come.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The qualities that were most important were determination, authenticity and self-confidence. Success doesn’t happen without the will and determination to succeed. I vowed to remain authentic to my brand and to myself. Photography is personal and whatever you do in life, is a reflection of who you are. There isn’t a separation of job/persona. Your career and your art should be a reflection of you. Imposter sydrone is real. You need the self confidence to know that you belong and you’re great at what you do. If not, you’ll constantly find yourself competing with others and changing to adapt to popularity and the trends in this field.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
As a child, my teachers were some of the most important people in my life. I was nurtured and encouraged in a way that still resonates with me today. My elementary/high school teachers are still present in my life. They are constantly providing guiding and cheering from the sidelines.
