Meet Mohamad Alkhayat

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mohamad Alkhayat a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Mohamad with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Following the work of top interior designers in United States, I always see one or 2 pieces of Syrian furniture used in celebrities home decor as a piece of art. Antique Syrian furniture can been found in museums such as LA museum or Met museum in NYC, all this inspired me to recreate Syrian craft to new level to fit modern home design.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Combining my passion for design & business, I opened my first showroom in the year of 2006 in NYC as an extension of my family business that started by my grandfather around 1935 in Damascus Syria.

My drive to creating and designing authentic Mother of pearl inlaid Syrian furniture grew stronger as I cooperated with several interior designers in NYC. I took Syrian furniture to a next level by creating shapes that fit the modern living without losing the authentic Syrian inlay technique that existed for hundreds of years.

Every piece of furniture is made at my family workshop in Damascus, and shipped to my showroom in Los Angeles CA to be available to my clients base in US.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
keep your work authentic, even if I’m creating something new, keeping the same authentic technique, change the shape, how it look or change the color, but use same exact original materials and technique.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to contact with new interior designers and home owners to offer them my service to create a sophisticated piece of furniture that fit any project or any room they’re looking to decorate. They can check out my business website to view my collection, and browse my recent projects photos. They can email me or call me to schedule private consultation.
