Meet Molly Bergman

We were lucky to catch up with Molly Bergman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Molly, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I believe my work ethic comes from a combination of my upbringing, my peers, and personal experiences.
My parents are the hardest workers I know. They have always taught and continue to teach me the importance of responsibility, dedication and the principle that hard work pays off.
I also like to surround myself with peers that inspire and motivate me to work harder at what I’m doing – whether it be in school, music, or life.
Passion for what I do is the main key to what drives me to keep learning and improving each day. Music and songwriting has been one of the biggest parts of my life since I was a little girl, and my love for it fuels my commitment towards it.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name’s Molly Bergman and I’m a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Dana Point, California, and am currently attending the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. Influenced by the singer-songwriters of the early 1970s, as well as contemporary artists such as Noah Kahan, Kacey Musgraves and Gracie Abrams, my original songs hopefully contain reflective, ironic lyrics and catchy melodies.
I began classical piano lessons at the age of 5. Shortly after, following a Hannah Montana concert, I started taking acoustic guitar and singing lessons. With the encouragement from my first guitar teacher, I wrote my first song, “Down at the Beach,” when I was 8 and have been writing songs ever since. I also play banjo and mandolin, and have a drum kit in my bedroom on which I hang my clothes.
I have been performing live ever since I was a teenager; from LA to New York, from Hawaii to London. I have opened for Michael McDonald, Jewel, Train, comedian Louie Anderson and comedian Rita Rudner. When home in California, I can be found performing locally at venues such as the Laguna Playhouse, the stage at Forest Avenue Promenade in Laguna Beach, The Festival of the Arts, and The Old Acre Winery, where I have a regular weekly residency.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Time management and adaptability are two very important qualities that have helped me grow throughout my musical journey. Prioritizing certain tasks and giving myself the room/time to work comfortably is something that has helped me effectively get done what I need to get done. Time management has also improved the quality of the work I am putting out.
Adaptability, especially in the entertainment industry, is crucial. Things are most definitely not always going to go according to plan, which I am learning as I navigate this space. However, I truly believe in the idea the rejection is just re-direction.
Last, but most certainly not least, the piano has made a huge impact on my journey. I’m serious! If your mom or dad makes you take piano lessons as a kid, stick with it. I wanted to quit piano lessons so many times and my parents wouldn’t let me. I now see why, and deeply thank them for that. Having a background in classical piano has helped me immensely when it comes to picking up other instruments, learning music theory, and looking cool on stage switching from guitar to piano!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Always! Anyone!
I love writing music with others, playing music with others, sharing music with others … so basically anything regarding music with others.
