Meet Molly Leach

We were lucky to catch up with Molly Leach recently and have shared our conversation below.

Molly , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is real! I do not know if this is something that is overcome, but instead, something that you learn to deal with when it occurs. It is remitting and is not always there. For me, it shows its head at the most inopportune times when normally large life events occur. For me, I deal with this by reflecting inward. Seeing if my goals align with my morals. I think about how far I have come and the people that I have touched with my art. I believe the biggest part of overcoming imposter syndrome is to continue to forge ahead. Continue forward in creating what makes you happy. As you continue to learn and grow, those feelings of insecurity go away.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I started my journey with abstract art back in 2018. I had always created artwork, but only for myself, not for others. In 2018 I found the artform “fluid art” and I fell in love with how freeing it was. I started to truly enjoy the creative side of myself again. One day, a friend said to me, “you should make a YouTube channel and show others what you do!” That night, I went home, started the channel (having no idea what I was doing!) and my journey began. I have now grown my social media presence across all my platforms (www.smartartcourses.com) to over 2 million followers. I paint and show others how to do the same. I became a co-owner of an art course platform. I made tons of friends internationally. I began to sell my art world-wide. It was only because I took my friends advice and put myself out there for the world to see that I have the success that I do. I showcase and sell my art at art shows and online from my website (mollys-artistry.com). I still find joy in creating artwork. My passion is still there; and that is why I still love what I do.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. I didn’t let inertia hold me back. There were tons of times that I could have second guessed myself. Thought that something was too hard to tackle. But instead, every time I was faced with a challenge, I just worked through it. I learned what I needed to do and did it.
2. I learned to network. Finding “your people” and creating a network of supportive people is SO important. I would not be here if I didn’t have those people.
3. I am a continuous learner. I crave information. I love learning new techniques, constantly pushing my creative envelope and trying new things.

My advice would be: Trust in yourself. You are good enough to do whatever it is you put your mind to. Always stay inquisitive and try to be as creative as you can.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I create lists. I write it all down. Organize it. So that I can create a plan and move forward. For me, checking even small things off of my list makes me feel accomplished. And as I progress, I feel more and more confident that I can do it all. My advice would be to set small, realistic goals that you can accomplish. Be organized and systematic with how you can achieve them. Do not let small set backs lead you astray. Use them as stepping stones to move forward and appreciate that those set backs may be some of your best learning experiences.
