Meet Monay Taylor

We recently connected with Monay Taylor and have shared our conversation below.

Monay , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I’ve daydreamed about what I envisioned my life to be since I was at least 11 years old. I always thought of the city I may live in, the types of clothes I would be able to wear and actually afford. I couldn’t envision my closet to be anything less than a remix version of what Carrie Bradshaws’ was. I figured what type of career I may have a chance at being successful at, but realized I wanted to make the most money, doing the least amount of work. I’ll admit, I was lazy. Once I got to college, I immediately realized laziness can only get you so far. You can have the vision, but you also must do the work. I just figured the work HAD to be something I enjoyed, and worth my efforts. This happens to be fashion, it’s always been. I noticed the more I worked at something the better I got. So I started building habits of practice, even when it was hard. It hasn’t been easy, and pessimism and doubt can seep in; thankfully, I’ve witnessed too many great moments in my life and career thus far that keeps me on the side of optimism. So my optimism comes from seeing results! What’s the worst that can happen? At least you tried, and you’ve witnessed some results being possible. Many (not all) of those daydreams I had at 11 have come true. I’m grateful for that.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I do a lot! I’m happy to say I’ve been able to expand and showcase my talents with various creative avenues that I’m interested in; such as designing, wardrobe styling, and tailoring. Lately, I’ve been focusing on tailoring a lot, which is a world I never imagined taking off for me like it has. I enjoy doing my tailoring work, because it forces and challenges me to refine my craft. It’s also rewarding to see your work with fit, and making someone look and feel exceptionally more confident in their clothing. I truly enjoy designing and wardrobe styling just the same, here I’m able to really dive into my modes of creative expression. I am working on sharing the wealth of sewing soon by teaching courses to young people who are intrigued with the industry. I’m also planning to create some capsule pieces as well very soon under my brand @monaybydesign, and have them carried in black owned boutiques or curated shops very very soon. Please follow my brand page @monaybydesign, for updates on my design work, and my personal page @monaymuny for updates on all other creative and personal gems.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I absolutely have to say I’m still learning what these are. But, I can say as of lately a few have become more prevelant than others and maybe more vital during this time in my life. One quality or skill is to never underestimate your networking peers. You truly never know who is who, or how someone is willing and able to help you. I would say when you’re meeting new people, be yourself and the organic connections will always stick. Be on time. No matter what position you hold, or how insignificant you think your role is, make the effort to be on time for your projects because it shows a great reflection of you, and builds trust with your clients. This one may take some sacrifice if you’re chronically late, but it’s not impossible to adjust. Do your best. This may be one that I am still learning, which is to not beat yourself up too bad when your not happy with your work, just always do your best and realize there’s always room for improvement and be willing to learn along way. That one may be a bit transparent but it’s honest. I do think that creatives are naturally very sensitive with their art/work. Take a deep breath and try again.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

My ideal client is patient, forthcoming and thoughtful. Since my job is so invasive I feel, I really admire when I have a client who is honest about what they want, how the work is turning out for them, all while being patient with the process. My ideal client is also someone who pays on time and communicates when payments are going to be delayed. LOL if we’re being honest.
