Meet Monica Garcia

We recently connected with Monica Garcia and have shared our conversation below.

Monica, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I consider myself an accidental entrepreneur. Years ago I took a photography class at a community college and when the course finished the instructor pulled me aside and said I should continue on to the intermediate classes. For a long time it was just a hobby but then one day someone handed me an envelope with money and I realized I could actually make a career out of doing what I loved. In 2016 I chose to be the woman who went for it. It wasn’t the path I thought I would take but I couldn’t silence the whisper. It’s now been over six years full time in my business. I’ve always been a daydreamer (I used to get in trouble for it!) and now I get to dream up the different shots I am going to create.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My biggest strength is my ability to adapt. I am the CEO, founder, creator, manager, etc of Girl Squad. I have to wear a lot of different hats being a business owner and principal photographer. My team and my clients and their brands depend on my leadership and being able to “fly the plane and fix it at the same time.” Being able to adapt and do so in a way that evokes confidence in you by your client is vital to having a successful business.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Make a choice and go for it. One of them will work and one of them won’t. But you will never know, unless you choose one.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My parent’s most impactful move was to switch me schools in the 10th grade! It made me find new friends, learn new things and introduced me to my dream college!
