We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mònica Losada. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mònica below.
Mònica, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
It’s a work in progress! I’d say it’s a sum of factors:
Reminding myself that no one has all the answers and that growth comes from being uncomfortable and knowing that setbacks are temporary and part of the process. Realizing that even the people I admire most have moments of doubt has helped me see myself with more compassion.
Also, I find important to learn to celebrate progress rather than results. Last year Mònica would be proud of where I am right now and that’s more than enough.
Knowing that setbacks are temporary and part of the process.
Relying on the people around me. Since I moved to NYC last year I’ve been very lucky to find myself surrounded by a lot of creative, supportive and down-to-earth people—friends, mentors, and colleagues motivate me. We can’t ignore that we are social animals and that circumstances and environment shape us.
And lastly—being optimistic. Staying curious about what’s next makes it easier to stay hopeful, motivated and sure of myself.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a designer and creative who loves working at the intersection of experimentation and storytelling. My work is mainly typographic and I like to create visual experiences that feel dynamic, visually exciting and thought-provoking.
I believe design should invite curiosity, and I aim for my work to spark that in others. I want my work to feel both thoughtful and exuberant—whether it’s a client project or something personal, it’s always about finding a way to challenge norms and create something impactful.
As for what’s new, I moved to New York City a year ago to join Pentagram, which has been both an exciting and challenging experience. Being able to connect with the creative landscape that both Pentagram and NYC offer pushes me to approach my work with a new level of excitement, thoughtfulness and rigor. On a personal level, adapting to a new environment—both culturally and professionally—has been a growth journey in itself. It’s broadening my perspective, and encouraging me to embrace discomfort as part of the process.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity, adaptability, and collaboration have been key for me. Curiosity keeps me exploring, and adaptability helps me handle challenges by seeing change as a chance to grow. Collaboration has taught me so much about the value of different perspectives and learning from others. If you’re just starting out (like me!), be open to change, and surround yourself with people who inspire and push you—growth is always ongoing, and it’s better when shared.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I’d say teaching me a strong work-ethic. Growing up, my mom always used to tell me that it was important to find pride in whatever I ended up doing, no matter how small or big the task was. Showing up, doing your best, and finding joy in the effort.
