Meet Monica Rue

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monica Rue a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Monica , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I feel like I’ve been blessed with resilience. Because as many times as I’ve wanted to give up and do something else I never have! I keep working ! I keep doing my thing! Creating what I believe in and dancing to the beat of my own drum. My sister says that I have great determination. My husband encourages me to take breaks and come back with fresh eyes; when I’m fighting with a particular design! I think of all the people who have come before me and didn’t have the opportunity for success and how they would feel to see me throw in the towel. All those things mixed together make me keep being resilient and not letting me stand in my own way! So I get out of my own way and bravely work with newfound creativity, love, joy and determination each and every time!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello everyone! I am a designer of all things fiber related! What I mean is; from producing my own handspun yarn to making things from my handspun yarn to designing my own fabric line and then making Garments/clothing from that! I’m interested in doing things that are outside the box. Creating clothing and items with an old world feel but with an avant-garde aesthetic. I’m about comfort but with style and flair. Who says you can’t go to the dentist looking your best and feeling your best in whatever you’re wearing!? I love taking something “ordinary” and making it special!! I’m working on launching my new and bigger art batts for people who love to spin their own yarns. And expanding to teaching more people knitting, crocheting and sewing through workshops in person and online!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that are most impactful for my journey is self- determination, knowledge and creativity. The first one means never giving up on yourself no matter how hard things seem. Things are always better and easier to see the potential the day after. And to knowledge always learning more there is a world of knowledge out there between the Internet and books and people who have come before you that you can talk to and learn techniques, skills and tips. Third grade Tivitt he find your own path find your own inspiration for your creativity and let that shine through everything you do!

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone that has a good general idea of what they would like but also gives me a lot of creative freedom! Somebody that says this is my basic idea but I am trusting your eye for color and design and balance to make things! Those have been my most favorite clients are the ones that pretty much give me carte blanche! I consider myself very fortunate to have had wonderful clients in the past and presently!
