Meet Monica Wayts

We recently connected with Monica Wayts and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Monica, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from overcoming struggles and learning from my failures. At the beginning of my string art journey, I was faced with all of the challenges of being a first-time business owner and yet, despite self-doubt and uncertainty, I kept striving to move forward.

Then came additional difficulties. Covid, slow sales, and moments of frustration reshaped my outlook and strengthened my resolve to shift my offerings to more online options, leading DIY workshops, and finding events that supported my art.

With the hammer of each nail and woven thread, I grew not just in skill, but in purpose. Today, my art stands as a testament to resilience—a beautiful creation born from perseverance and passion.

Every string, every nail, and every design tells this story: strength isn’t about never falling; it’s about rising with grace and determination.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Every story has a beginning, and mine started with a single nail, a piece of string, and a willingness to try something new. What began as a hobby quickly grew into a passion and, eventually, a thriving business that blends creativity and connection. I create custom string art signs (3-D nailed designs on wood intertwined with crochet thread) that not only decorate spaces but also tells stories—yours and mine.

Resilience has been the core thread in my journey. In the early days, I made mistakes—misaligned nails, snapped strings, and designs that didn’t quite land. But every misstep taught me something valuable. Just like string art, where each line connects to create something beautiful, every challenge helped shape my path. I embraced the process, trusting that the work, like life, would come together one string at a time.

During the long days of Covid, I began to feel that with each sign I created, the repetitive motions of hammering and weaving began to offer me a calming release and sense of ongoing accomplishment.

Today, my pieces are more than just art; they’re meaningful expressions. Whether it’s a family name, an inspiring quote, or a vibrant design, I love helping people celebrate their stories through my craft. I also lead DIY workshops to empower others to explore their creativity, because I believe everyone has an inner creative waiting to emerge.

Beyond the art itself, my journey has shown me the importance of connection—to people, to purpose, and to passion. Every design I create carries a piece of my story while honoring the story of the person it’s made for which is how I landed on my business name Lil Bits of Mona.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Passion has been one of my guiding forces, allowing me to transform simple materials into meaningful expressions that resonate with people. My ability to visualize and bring intricate designs to life through string art is at the core of my business. Whether crafting custom pieces or inspiring others, my passion fuels everything I do.

Attention to detail is also an important quality in my creative work. The precision required for string art is essential. My focus on the fine details ensures that each piece is not only visually striking but also a reflection of my dedication and craftsmanship, from cutting wood in my garage and nailing each nail by hand to layering multiple string colors to make the design aesthetically pleasing.

Finally, connection is a core part of my journey. Connection —to clients, their stories, and the community—has enriched my work, making each piece deeply personal and impactful. My enthusiasm for string art drives me to constantly improve my skills, share my love for the craft, and inspire others through workshops and projects.

My advice for others would be to stay curious, focus on the process, and find local art and business communities.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m excited to explore opportunities to collaborate and partner with professionals for wellness retreats, mindfulness groups, and corporate team-building experiences.

By integrating my string art workshops into these environments, I believe we can create unique, meaningful experiences that foster creativity, mindfulness, and team cohesion. Whether it’s through guided sessions that encourage self-expression or collaborative projects that enhance connection, I’m eager to bring a fresh, artistic element to these transformative spaces.
