We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Monique Derouen . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Monique below.
Monique , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
First I think it’s important to recognize that haters and naysayers often lack experience or understanding of what you are trying to achieve.
There will always be individuals who doubt your abilities or criticize your goals. Oftentimes, these people have not walked the same path or achieved what you are striving for. Their perspective is limited, and they may project their own insecurities onto your ambitions.
In such situations, it’s vital to remind yourself of a few things:
1. Success is subjective: Define success based on your own values, aspirations, and achievements. Don’t let the opinions of others dictate what success means to you.
2. Stay focused on your driver: Remember why you started pursuing your goals in the first place. Keep that driving force at the forefront of your mind, so you can stay motivated and resilient despite the naysayers.
3. Surround yourself with support: Build a network of individuals who encourage and uplift you. Seek out mentors, who have done what you’re wanting to do, not those who just talk about it!
4. Use criticism constructively: Differentiate between constructive feedback and baseless negativity. Criticism that comes from a place of genuine concern or knowledge can be valuable. But this should only be accepted by those who have achieved the goal. Don’t take advice from anyone who has not!
Ultimately, it’s important to remember that haters and naysayers often arise due to their own insecurities and limitations. By staying true to yourself and your goals, and focusing on your own definition of success, you can overcome their negativity and persist towards achieving your dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I understand the challenges that come with working in the spa industry because I’ve been a part of it for over 25 years. For 12 of those years, I served as a Corporate Spa Trainer in a multimillion-dollar spa. It was a position I held with pride, but it also exposed me to the harsh reality of burnout in a field that I loved.
During that time, I was also a mom to two young kids, and I constantly struggled to find a balance between my home life and work commitments. Taking care of myself seemed impossible.
Unfortunately, I started experiencing various health issues like migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, and severe neck and back pain. It reached a point where I had to undergo multiple surgeries and was even hospitalized for adrenal fatigue. It was a wake-up call.
After years of enduring this rollercoaster of health challenges, I came to the realization that there had to be a better way. This realization prompted me to leave the corporate spa world and return to self-employment. Transitioning back to being my own boss was a significant change for me and brought its own level of stress.
But through this journey, I discovered the importance of prioritizing self-care and finding a healthier approach to work-life balance. It has become my mission to help other businesses avoid the same pitfalls and create a more sustainable and fulfilling career!
Today, I am passionate about sharing my experiences and knowledge to empower business professionals to prioritize their well-being while building successful careers. I believe that everyone deserves to thrive in their professional, financial, and personal lives without sacrificing their health. And that’s what drives me every single day.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back at my journey, there were three things that had the most significant impact:
1. Self-care: Prioritizing self-care is crucial for long-term success and well-being in any field. I’m not talking about naps and bubble baths. I’m talking about taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. This allows you to show up as your best self and have the energy to pursue your goals. It involves setting boundaries, managing stress, and practicing discipline. My advice for those early in their journey is to establish clear boundaries and create a routine that supports your well-being. Carve out time for activities that recharge you.
2. Continuous learning and growth: Committing to continuous learning and personal growth is essential in the business world. Not just consuming knowledge but implementing the knowledge. Staying adaptable, embracing new ideas, and keeping up with industry trends can give you a competitive edge. Seek out opportunities for professional development such as hiring a qualified mentor who has accomplished what you’re wanting to accomplish. Be open to feedback, actively seek out challenges, and view setbacks as learning opportunities. Embrace a growth mindset!
3. Building relationships and networking: Establishing strong professional relationships and a supportive network is invaluable. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and values can provide guidance, support, and collaboration opportunities. Actively network and seek out connections within your industry or business community. Attend events, join relevant groups or associations, and engage in online communities. Be proactive in building authentic relationships based on mutual respect and support. Cut away anything that does not align with the new version you are creating!
By focusing on self-care, continuous learning, discipline, drawing boundaries, and networking, you can enhance your journey in the business world and set yourself up for long-term success.
How would you describe your ideal client?
An ideal client for me is a business professional who recognizes the importance of their well-being and is ready for positive change. They have a strong desire to achieve a healthier work-life balance and are committed to overcoming their pain and discomfort. They are proactive and eager to explore different strategies and approaches to enhance their overall prosperity. They value personal growth and are motivated to take decisive action to transform their lives and create a more fulfilling and successful future.
