Meet Monique Sadarangani

We were lucky to catch up with Monique Sadarangani recently and have shared our conversation below.

Monique, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
Ever since I was a child I would often people watch and I saw a lot of undesirable behaviors (such as neediness, lack of understanding, inability to follow directions). I told myself that I wanted to always be one step ahead – instead of waiting for others to make a move, I decided that I was going to go out and seize opportunities. I wanted to learn as much as a could and as a result I was always very involved in many diverse school activities and I went to college for many different subjects.

As a result of this approach since childhood, the only way to maintain this focus and not be like everyone else around me has forced me to always maintain a high level of self-discipline. No one else is going to help you become great – that drive has to come from within.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I assist people with ensuring their legacies. I find out what is most important to them. How do they want to be remembered? How do they want their assets to be divided? Do they want to donate their belongings to charity? Do they want to leave money to family members? I help set things up so that life after their death is as smooth as possible for their grieving loved ones left behind. I help reduce unnecessary legal headaches.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that the three most impactful areas that helped me in my journey were my 1.) religious/spiritual background, 2.) independence, and 3.) resilience.

I would advise others to consider the community spirit and strength you gain from being involved in a positive spiritual group. There are many different types of religious centers that are great role models for ethics, which I believe we need help in more than ever in this challenging world.

I also advise people to remember they don’t have to always follow the pack. It’s great to be on teams, but sometimes doing your own thing is the only way to lead yourself to your true path in life, your destiny.

Lastly, life is going to repeatedly hit you hard. The important thing to remember is that everyone gets hit hard, just in different ways. Don’t stay down. Pick yourself up and get back in the game. Don’t give up on your original dream. Learn from the experience and grow more resilient.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My religious background has provided me with the greatest strength to overcome all of the various challenges I have faced. I can’t think of a single thing besides my spiritual background that has so consistently helped me through adversities of so many varying types. When I am feeling low or unmotivated I turn to my religion for guidance. Sometimes I speak to clergy at my church, in other cases I simply meditate and get quiet with myself to find guidance during difficult times.
