We were lucky to catch up with MONN OTIENO recently and have shared our conversation below.
MONN, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
“My purpose stems from an innate desire to stir human emotion, to awaken something within through the language of visuals. So much of life today is lived in monotony, numbed by repetition. Through my work, I seek to break that stillness and offer moments that feel unexpected, alive, and deeply human.”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
“I feel that my mission here in the Minneapolis community is to bring back visual meaning, something people can truly connect with and relate to. My work is about understanding the goals and visions of others, and helping them bring those ideas to life through a new wave of media and storytelling. I want to stand beside people on their journeys, not just as a creator, but as a partner they can trust.
For a long time, I was searching for ‘my people,’ a sense of belonging, and I’ve come to realize that you must also be open to receiving what is being offered. At the core, people are looking for friends, collaborators, and allies, those they can rely on. What excites me most is how much bigger the creative scene here is than I first imagined. Everywhere I look, there’s a need for meaningful media, whether it’s preserving family moments, elevating businesses, or creating art that resonates.”
“As a filmmaker and photographer in Minneapolis, I create visuals that move people. Whether it’s cinematic storytelling for artists, brand films for businesses, or timeless moments for families. My work is about turning ideas and experiences into imagery that feels authentic, relatable, and alive.”
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
“The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are my attention to detail, my ability to craft a visual language that feels cinematic, like something out of a Netflix movie or documentary and my genuine love for what I do. I don’t just watch films or shows for entertainment; I study them. Every frame becomes a lesson, and I spend hours analyzing how visuals create emotion.
For those just starting out, my advice would be to immerse yourself fully in what inspires you. Pay attention to the small details, practice building your own visual language, and most importantly, love the process. Passion will carry you through the long hours and challenges, and over time, that dedication will set you apart.”
