Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Monserrat Celaya. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Monserrat, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping your creativity alive is a continuous process. I struggled with it when I jumped back into painting because I spent so much time painting furniture in solid colors and not fully expressing my ideas for so long that when I sat back down to paint my mind was blank. I like to think that I was just not in the present moment anymore and that really affected me and now I look around and I pay more attention and that is the key to keeping your creativity alive. Being more present. The ideas flow when you’re with the right people, in the right places in the right moments. I started spending alot more time in nature and working on my mental health and that helped bring back that clarity to see my ideas clearly again. The people I spent my time with also helped my creativity it opens up your mind to new things like cultures, ideas and perspectives. I went to places that really inspired me, the architecture in cities is amazing and seeing other peoples ideas manifested in society was very inspirational and kept me on my toes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Monserrat and 5 years ago I started a vintage furniture business full of colorful eclectic statement pieces. I have been very successful here in denver for the past years and I am ready as an artist to expand and immerse myself back into the art world of painting. I am very excited about it and can’t wait to share my work soon. I love the idea of my art one day being displayed in galleries and people’s home. It will be pretty cool if I got to see my furniture and my art together in the same home.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say the three qualities that had the most impact on my journey were my ability to draw inspiration from a wide range of creative fields, my skill in envisioning things before they’re completed, and my dedication to deeply understanding my craft. Spending time exploring fashion, interior design, art, architecture, and other areas allowed me to draw from a rich pool of influences and ideas. My knack for visualizing outcomes before they’re realized helped me stay focused and guide projects effectively.
For those who want to get started in a journey like this it would be good to spend some time around people who do what you want to do and see if that’s something you would want to do. It is important to continue to learn more always so you can offer something good. Also, not giving up because it’s not easy but it’s also not impossible so being very persistent is key!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m excited to announce a new venture in which I aim to collaborate with boutique shops, interior designers, and art galleries to showcase my work in a fresh and engaging way. By partnering with boutiques, I plan to feature my unique furniture pieces in their curated spaces, blending my designs with their stylish selections to create captivating retail environments. Similarly, I envision working closely with interior designers to integrate my furniture into their projects, offering a bespoke touch to their clients’ homes and offices. Additionally, I look forward to exhibiting my paintings in galleries, where they can be appreciated alongside other artistic creations, sparking conversations and inspiring new perspectives. These collaborations will not only highlight the versatility and artistry of my work but also foster a vibrant exchange of creativity and innovation across different design realms.
