Meet Moorisha Bey-Taylor, Esq.

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Moorisha Bey-Taylor, Esq.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Moorisha below.

Hi Moorisha, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

I believe you can never lose betting on yourself. While there is always risk involved in any endeavor, I believe when you invest your time, energy, and resources into yourself you can’t lose, and every incremental step towards progress is a win.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
No problem. I have been named “Top Lawyers Under 40” by the National Bar Association as an Intellectual Property and Entertainment Attorney that works closely with creatives to bring their brands to the utmost potential. My practice is deeply woven into the fabric of the Los Angeles and LBGTQIA+ community, where I help creators and others on licensing deals, IP prosecution, and a variety of other contracts that affect an artist’s day to day work. My work consists of intellectual property protection, entertainment law, trademarks, copyright, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness), cease and desist, brand collaborations, and contracts. Our clients include civil rights activists, social media influencers, fashion designers, athletes, visual artists, musicians and trailblazing thought leaders globally. I have spoken at the National Bar Association, American Bar Association, numerous colleges and universities: becoming a sought after resource for my thought leadership and expertise in the field of Intellectual Property Law.

I have been recognized by the California Lawyers Association (Wiley W. Manuel Certificate for Pro Bono Legal Services); Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. (Outstanding Service & Leadership Award); Urban League of Los Angeles Young Professionals (Community Empowerment and Changemaker Award), and the University of California, San Diego (2008 Outstanding Senior Award). I’m also a recipient of Oregon Law’s Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. This recognition is given to law school graduates who have made significant career, leadership, or service contributions to their communities, to the School of Law and the legal profession within the first 10 years after graduation.

I’m currently serving my fifth consecutive term on the Board of Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Inc. and also work as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Santa Monica College. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California of San Diego, and my law degree from University of Oregon.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Persistence, Positivity, and Forward-Thinking.
I often feel my mind and ideas live somewhere deeply in the future. Thinking about the future I can see positive outcomes and that keeps me persistent and pressing forward toward my goals.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Boundaries. As a law firm owner, boundaries are probably the most challenging part of my practice. Being so outward facing and in the public eye, people often get very excited to talk to me and pick my brain even in the most casual settings. I often have to set the appropriate boundaries and respectfully decline these conversations to maintain the required confidentiality and integrity of legal matters. I find boundaries are paramount for being able to a deliver quality product to my clients and also maintain my own level of self-care and autonomy. Discernment has been key and it’s knowing when to say “yes” and more importantly when to say “no”.
