We were lucky to catch up with Morgan Debs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
As a Nurse Practitioner, business owner, mom, daughter, friend, people pleaser and empath, I am constantly giving my energy, my time and my care to others. But, as I’ve matured, I have learned that if I run on empty, I become less effective at all of it.
In order to combat burnout I integrate a wellness routine into my everyday life. I support my body physically with nutrient-dense food, red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen, IV nutrients, glutathione, NAD+, and balanced hormones. I have a nighttime routine of ashwaganda tea, magnesium and meditations with my kids. By implementing these, I have the energy and stamina to lead my many roles with clarity and purpose. I can show up fully for my patients, family and friends making thoughtful decisions and creating a space where they feel seen and cared for. When I’m grounded, rested, and well, I can give my family the presence and patience they deserve. I am also setting an example for my children of what whole body health looks like. They will grow up learning how to prioritize themselves and in turn this will allow them to combat stress, poor health habits, negative self talk and hopefully so much more.
Finding joy in the little moments like laughing around the table and maintaining a positive attitude is vital and also challenging at times. This takes intention, especially with the influence of others, sometimes negative attitudes, or after a long day. If I cannot laugh with and hug my kids, at the end of the day, what is all of the hard work for? Everything in life requires balance and consistency. Showing up consistently for myself is the first step in achieving my personal and professional goals.
Being a Practitioner, wife and mother requires emotional availability. In order to continue to provide this day-in and day-out I have to protect and maintain my own mental health. I see a counselor every other week, not because something is necessarily wrong, but because it gives me space to share what my dreams and fears are. It gives me a safe space to reflect, grow and express myself.
By setting healthy boundaries, practicing deep breathing, meditating, praying, and embracing daily rituals, I protect the capacity I have to love and support those closest to me without becoming depleted.
As a nurse practitioner, my own self-care informs my ability to care for others authentically. I am not recommending treatments or wellness strategies I wouldn’t implement for myself. I believe in living what I teach. That integrity builds trust with my patients and allows me to serve them from a place of alignment.
Ultimately, self-care isn’t about indulgence or selfishness, it’s about protecting our best self. I can only pour into my business, my family, my patients, and my relationships when I am well on the inside and out. If I don’t show up for myself first, I cannot sustainably show up for anyone else. This is something I feel passionate about and this is what I hope to model for my family and every person who walks through our doors at House of Skin and Health.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Nurse Practitioner and I feel extremely lucky to be able to influence and change people’s lives for the better. There is no greater joy for me than helping a patient feel, not just better, but their very best. I like to take a deeply personalized approach to wellness and I thrive off creating complex treatment plans that address many areas of health. My recommendations are different for everyone because everyones genetics, experiences and habits are unique to them. I get to influence how people experience life, how long they live and their health span. It is such an honor for me to get to walk alongside a patient and see them meet their fullest potential both physically and mentally. Diving deep into this is what ignites my soul and, I have no doubt, is my calling. House of Skin and Health was created to be an inviting space where time is made to understand patients, where they come from and where they want to go. I tried to think outside of the standard medical care box as much as possible and I think we have accomplished something really unique and special.
We are excited to be launching a functional medicine concierge membership model this Winter.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Qualities: resilience, deep belief in myself, desire for impact – starting a practice requires a certain amount of grit and the ability to trust your own vision even when others might not agree or you face obstacles
Skills: having such a broad base of knowledge has been very helpful- not a lot of practitioners have experience in hormone therapy, IVs, functional medicine, primary care and aesthetics. This comprehensive skill set allows me to treat patients for many concerns and not have to send them out to someone else. This creates convenience for the patient. Critical thinking is a must.
Areas of Knowledge: learning from others is so important, not being arrogant or thinking you know more than someone else. This includes listening to and learning from patients and their lived experiences. I have taken pearls from each business owner I have worked with. I have taken a mental note of what worked for them and what didn’t, this has allowed me to create my own space with these in mind.
My advice for others would be to cultivate resilience. Building anything meaningful will test you both physically and mentally. There will be seasons where things feel difficult, uncertain, or even lonely. The key is learning how to stay grounded in your vision. You must trust yourself and keep going, especially when the path isn’t perfectly clear. Staying grounded in yourself and not riding the roller coaster of emotions is key. In every decision you make, come back to the core values
Invest deeply in your knowledge base and skill set. Make time for investing back into yourself and into growing your skill set and knowledge. In medicine and many other professions, protocols, hypotheses, and trends will always evolve, what won’t change is the need for Practitioners who can think holistically, connect the dots, and design care that serves the whole person. Either niche down and become the absolute expert at what you do or adopt a broad, skill set and knowledge base that allows you to provide something that no one else can.
Arrogance is the quickest way to limit your growth. Stay humble and stay curious. The more you learn, the more you’ll realize how much there still is to know. Never be afraid to learn from those around you because curiosity is what keeps you evolving. Also be helpful and share your knowledge with others, don’t gate keep what was given to you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I would love to collaborate with small business owners and rotate their items into HOSH for customers to buy. I would be looking for individuals who can offer items that align with HOSH- health, self care, non-toxic items, healthy snacks or juices etc.
I am also looking to collaborate and support like-minded people in the industry. I don’t look at others as competition, but like to form collaborative and support relationships with others. We can each be unique in our own way.
