We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Hamilton-lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Hi Morgan, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
This is a question I’m asked a lot. Writer’s block is no joke, and it can cripple you creatively. Inspiration comes from the strangest places. Taking a walk and clearing your head, going for a drive, talking about the story issue out loud. There are a million methods, but the one that has worked most for me in the long run for me has always been to absorb new stories. Whether it’s watching a movie, reading a book, reading a script, a podcast, or even music. And I find it best to take in stories that aren’t similar to yours. It’ll get your head in a different brain space, and maybe spark an idea. Could be a good idea, or a bad idea, but it gets you back to your story with a new idea.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ve been making movies since 2012. I’ve worked in nearly every aspect of film, starting as an Actor/Director, and now finding my feet as a Producer/Casting Director. I Produced 4 films in 2024 written and directed by women. I’ve made over 30 short films, a feature, and a web series, which was my debut project under my title, Tricky Ink Productions in 2017. I quit my 9-5 job last year to pursue my passion, and learn the business side of filmmaking. I became a DBA during COVID, and decided to take a backseat in directing, and focus on community building, and helping other artists tell their stories. I host networking events at True West Film Center in Healdsburg. I have a newsletter, I’m building my actor archive, I offer script critiquing, and I’m getting back into writing, just to make sure I don’t get rusty.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication and being able to work on a team. The ability to hear and be receptive to feedback from anyone. And having the courage to talk to strangers in relevant scenarios. All of these, are so important in any art form, and so many people don’t know how to one or more of these. So many art forms are a collaborative effort, especially filmmaking. Don’t try to do it alone.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Always! Actors, writers, filmmakers, anyone who works in film, please reach out. Tricky Ink Productions on Instagram. Or email me [email protected]. I always want to meet new people. If you have a script or acting reel you want feedback on, you want advice on how to get a project off the ground, whatever it is!
