Meet Morgan Rusher

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Morgan Rusher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Morgan , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

As a fashion designer, my resilience often comes from a mix of passion, creativity, and the ability to adapt. It’s driven by a deep love for the craft, the thrill of seeing an idea take shape, and the understanding that setbacks are part of the creative process. Rejection, competition, and constantly changing trends can be challenging, but resilience is built by viewing these obstacles as opportunities for growth and reinvention.

Fashion is about pushing boundaries, taking risks, and turning limitations into innovative solutions. A resilient designer knows how to learn from failures, draw inspiration from diverse sources, and stay true to their unique vision, even in the face of adversity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As a fashion designer, I see myself as a storyteller, using fabric, color, and form to create visual narratives that resonate with people. My role involves not just designing clothes but also curating experiences that connect with individuals on a deeper level. From sketching initial ideas to overseeing production and refining every detail, the process is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

What excites me the most is the transformative power of fashion. It’s not just about clothing—it’s about identity, culture, and emotion. Seeing someone wear my designs and feel more confident or expressive is what makes all the hard work worthwhile. I find inspiration everywhere—nature, architecture, or even conversations—and I aim to bring those influences into my work in fresh and innovative ways.

If I had to describe my brand, it’s about [describe the unique ethos or style of your brand, such as minimalism, sustainability, avant-garde, etc.]. I strive to create pieces that are timeless yet forward-thinking, focusing on quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

Right now, I’m excited to announce the debut of my newest collection which will be based upon westernized fashion and the significance of the western lifestyle itself. I’ll be being nominated for an award as one of the top fashion designers within my city. I’ve been working hard to expand my offerings and bring a more diverse range of designs to our audience. Keep an eye out for what’s to come—I can’t wait to share what’s coming next!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities or skills in my journey as a designer were **creativity, resilience, and business acumen**.

1. **Creativity and Vision**
Creativity is at the core of being a designer. It’s the ability to think beyond trends and create something unique that defines your voice and brand. Developing your creative vision means constantly experimenting, taking inspiration from various sources, and not being afraid to push boundaries.

**Advice**: For aspiring designers, practice observing the world around you with an open mind. Study art, culture, architecture—anything that sparks your imagination. Sketch every day and create mood boards to visualize your ideas. The goal is to refine your personal aesthetic and learn to trust your instincts.

2.Resilience and Adaptability
The fashion industry is full of setbacks and challenges. Designs get rejected, trends change, and the competition is fierce. Being resilient is what helps you get back up after a failure, learn from mistakes, and keep moving forward. Adaptability allows you to pivot your ideas and approach based on feedback or changing market conditions.

**Advice**: Build resilience by viewing every challenge as a learning opportunity. Accept criticism as part of the process and focus on continuous improvement. Surround yourself with a support network of mentors or peers who understand the journey and can provide constructive feedback.

3. Business Acumen and Networking
Understanding the business side of fashion is crucial. This includes knowledge of production, pricing, marketing, and distribution. Being able to connect creatively with people and communicate your vision is also a major part of building your brand.

**Advice**: Take courses or workshops on fashion marketing, branding, and production processes. Attend fashion events, trade shows, and seminars to network and learn from others. Cultivate relationships with suppliers, buyers, and other designers—they can be invaluable to your growth and opportunities in the industry.

Overall, focus on honing these qualities while staying true to your unique vision. Fashion is a marathon, not a sprint—consistent effort, learning, and resilience will set you up for long-term success.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m overwhelmed I pray and give it to God. I constantly remind myself that God gave me this purpose and regardless what’s missing God will always make room and provide as needed. The greatest advice I have is to keep going!! It’s okay to slow down but don’t quit!!!
