We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan Taylor Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.
Hi Morgan, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Fake it until you make it. I know that phrase may have a negative connotation to some, but here’s how it worked for me. I often say that our mind is the strongest muscle we have. So, during times when I may have been in rooms with people who were more experienced or further in their careers than I was, I would hold my head high and carry myself into those rooms as though I belonged there – even when I felt insecure. The more I did that, I began to train myself and my mind to know that I was supposed to be in any space, literally or figuratively, that I entered.
Being confident and having high self-esteem is like a muscle – the more you work on it, the stronger it becomes.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Morgan Taylor Jones, a singer, songwriter, and model based in Los Angeles. Music makes my heart smile and fills my spirit in ways that are indescribable. I grew up in a musical family, so it’s always been part of my life. I think in song, I hear in harmony. Over the years, music has allowed me to connect with people from all around the world and perform on some incredible platforms such as, BET’s Black Girls Rock, at the legendary Apollo Theater in New York City, and on various stages produced by the global brand Sofar Sounds.
I’ve always been good at and enjoyed writing; so, it naturally blossomed into songwriting while I was a teenager. Since releasing original songs, my music has been featured on outlets like Apple Music Beats 1 Radio, and has allowed me to collaborate with other amazing artists. Singing is something that brings me so much joy. It’s so powerful how a song can change your whole mood. When I’m performing, nothing else matters and I love the feeling of singing live on stage, accompanied by live instruments. I recently started my own live music series, An Evening with Morgan Taylor Jones, which takes place at The Line Hotel in Los Angeles, and features performances by me and other local artists. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There are a lot of things I could consider. Some that stand out are my time working behind the scenes in the entertainment business, attending Hampton University, and living in New York City.
I’ve always been an artist who wanted to understand the music industry from the inside, out. So I was intentional about working in the music + entertainment industry early on. I wanted to learn the business side of it, make connections, and overall just learn as much as I could. Doing so, especially in New York City, provided me with the chance to meet, observe, and learn from some of the biggest and best in the industry.
I’m a proud graduate of Hampton University. While there, I was a Music Major, with a concentration in Vocal Performance and a minor in Piano. Our music program was classically based, so I received formal training as a classical soprano. Though a genre that was very different from anything I previously had experience in, I appreciate the foundation of singing and techniques that it provided. But overall, attending Hampton was one of the best chapters of my life. I had an amazing experience, great opportunities (before and after graduating), and met some incredible people who are now life-long friends. I’ll always be an advocate for schools such as Hampton, an HBCU (Historically Black College or University), and the ways they enrich not only our culture but society as a whole.
New York was always the city of my dreams. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to live there, and from my teenage years did things to put me in a position to move there as soon as it was time to do so. Living in NYC is such a unique experience. It teaches you a lot about yourself, how to hustle, find your way, create a name and life for yourself, and how to persevere. The old saying is true, “if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.” Much of who I am as a person is due to my years living in New York, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
For those early in their journey, I’d say find and remember your “why.” Though it sounds cliche, it’s the internal motivation that will keep you going when the path is gray and things seem unclear. Find places, spaces, and people that motivate you and reignite your fire. It’s a necessary flame to light, over and over again, as many times as you need to.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I have a lot of things I’m working on in 2024. In general, I want to create more of a music community here in LA. If you’re a fellow artist, musician, producer, or songwriter, let’s connect! I’m also looking for people to work with on social media ventures, and people to connect with about performance opportunities.
Additionally, I recently started my very own live music series, An Evening with Morgan Taylor Jones, which is a showcase featuring performances from me and other local artists. Taking place at The Line Hotel in Koreatown, our first event was a success and there will be more to come next year!
