We recently connected with Morgan Tempel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room—whether it’s as a woman in leadership, a nurse stepping into business ownership, or a lactation consultant advocating in spaces that don’t always prioritize maternal and infant health—has been a defining part of my journey. It can feel isolating at times, but I’ve learned that my uniqueness is also my strength.
One of the most important lessons I’ve embraced is owning my expertise with confidence. When I first transitioned from hospital-based lactation consulting to opening my own practice, I faced skepticism. But I reminded myself that my 20 years as a nurse, my IBCLC certification, and my lived experience as a mother of four gave me the knowledge and perspective to create something truly impactful. Instead of shrinking in spaces where I felt different, I leaned into my expertise and let my results speak for themselves.
I’ve also learned the value of building relationships and seeking allies. Whether it’s collaborating with other providers, mentoring new professionals, or finding a community of like-minded business owners, surrounding myself with support has been key. I might be the only one in the room at times, but that doesn’t mean I have to walk the journey alone.
Finally, I remind myself that representation matters. By showing up, speaking up, and leading with authenticity, I create space for others to do the same. If my presence in the room helps another person feel seen, heard, or inspired to break barriers, then the challenge of being “the only one” is absolutely worth it.
At the end of the day, I’ve learned that success isn’t about blending in—it’s about standing firm in who you are and using your voice to create meaningful change.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My journey to founding Newma Wellness was shaped by two decades as a nurse, a passion for supporting new families, and the realization that healthcare—especially postpartum and pediatric care—needed a more holistic, patient-centered approach. I started as an in-hospital lactation consultant, but in 2020, I took a leap and opened The Milky Minute, a private lactation practice. Seeing the need for a broader scope of care, I expanded in 2023 to create Newma Wellness—a space where families can access comprehensive primary care, lactation support, and integrative healthcare under one roof.
At Newma, we provide full-scope family primary care, serving patients from newborns to adults up to age 65. What makes us unique is our blended approach to medicine—we respect and incorporate both Western and Eastern philosophies, ensuring patients receive well-rounded, personalized care. Whether it’s preventive medicine, mental health support, chiropractic care, or craniosacral therapy, we look at the whole person, not just the symptoms.
One of the most special aspects of our clinic is our in-house lactation support. As an IBCLC myself, I know how essential early feeding support is, so we’ve built a team of lactation professionals to help families navigate breastfeeding, bottle feeding, tongue/lip ties, and infant wellness. This seamless integration of lactation care within a medical setting is something I wish had existed when I was a young mother.
We are also growing! Beginning March 1st, we’re excited to welcome Dr. Craig Loerzel, DO, to our team. His experience in osteopathic medicine aligns perfectly with our mission, bringing a hands-on, holistic approach to family healthcare. His addition will allow us to expand services and continue offering exceptional, patient-centered care.
At the heart of Newma Wellness is a simple but powerful belief: families deserve compassionate, comprehensive, and evidence-based care in an environment that feels like home. I’m proud of what we’ve built and excited for what’s ahead!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I can say that three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to lifelong learning.
Resilience: Pushing Forward When Things Get Tough
Starting a business—especially in healthcare—is full of challenges. From navigating regulations to balancing patient care with business operations, there have been moments where it would’ve been easier to quit. But resilience kept me going. I’ve learned that setbacks aren’t failures; they’re just redirections. My advice? Get comfortable with discomfort. Challenges are part of the process, and pushing through them will make you stronger and more confident in your path.
Adaptability: Embracing Change & Growth
Healthcare, business, and patient needs are constantly evolving. If I had stuck rigidly to one plan, Newma Wellness wouldn’t be what it is today. I started with lactation consulting, then expanded into full-scope primary care because I saw the need. Being open to change and willing to pivot has been key. My advice? Stay curious. Listen to your patients, your industry, and your intuition. The ability to evolve is what will set you apart and keep you growing.
Lifelong Learning: Never Assuming You’ve ‘Made It’
Even with 20 years in nursing, multiple certifications, and business ownership, I know there’s always more to learn. Whether it’s keeping up with new medical research, expanding my understanding of integrative medicine, or learning better ways to run a business, growth never stops. My advice? Invest in education—whether it’s formal training, mentorship, or just reading and listening. Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.
For those just starting their journey, trust the process and lean into your passion. There will be obstacles, but every challenge is an opportunity to refine your vision and skills. Keep going—you never know how impactful your work will be until you look back and see how far you’ve come.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely! Collaboration is at the heart of what we do at Newma Wellness, and we’re always looking to partner with individuals and organizations who share our vision of comprehensive, patient-centered care for families.
We are particularly interested in collaborating with:
