Meet Moriah Dejohnette

We recently connected with Moriah Dejohnette and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Moriah, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I can say I get a lot of my work ethic from my dad. He taught from a young age to always work for what I wanted and that nothing comes free in life. I used to not like that I wasn’t spoiled and given everything, it helped me when I became an adult.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Moriah Dejohnette I was born and raised here in Sandiego my whole life. My mother and father both worked hard to make sure my siblings and I always had a roof over our head and food on the table so hard work is a foundation of my family. My father was a General Contractor for about thirty years. When I was younger I would always go on jobs with him to “help” even though I wasn’t doing to much. When I got older I started working for him on weekends and got into the plumbing trade. I love working with my hands, and I fell in love with the fact that my day is never a repeat of the day before, there’s always something new, plus I love working with my hands and building/fixing things. After I graduated high school I worked for my dad full time and learned the trade. When Covid hit us back in 2020 we lost a lot of business and eventually my dad closed his company. I kept plumbing for various companies so I could learn more. Now that I am a journeyman plumber I talked to my dad about opening up shop again and he said he’d be willing to partner with me. So now we have just Reopened Dyson Plumbing Inc.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

You have to have a lot of patience when it’s comes to plumbing, sometimes when your on a job it won’t go your way and you have to work with the circumstances. You have to have a work ethic when plumbing. I’ve worked Sunday-Saturday, sometimes morning sometimes mid day and even midnight. And you also have to be willing to always learn new things. Plumbing is one trade that is always changing, there’s always new codes, new tools, and new parts so you have to be able to want to learn.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Right now my number one obstacle is just getting my business out there for people to see. I have been using a couple different sights like Angie’s list to get my business out there, and I have also been using the business Instagram account @dyson_plumbing to make reels to promote the business.
