We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morrisville Youth Leadership Council Mylc. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morrisville Youth Leadership Council below.

Morrisville Youth Leadership Council, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

The Morrisville Youth Leadership Council had found its purpose in providing strong youth involvement and leadership in the community. Now, the foundation of MYLC was built on the idea that young individuals could play a key role in shaping the future of their town. This vision grew out of young Akhila’s deep desire to empower them on their leadership journey. With this new spark of passion, Akhila and a group of like-minded individuals presented their ideas to the Mayor of Morrisville. Impressed by their initiative and goals, the Mayor gave his support, leading to the official establishment of MYLC in 2013. This marked the beginning of an inspiring organization with a mission to make a truly long-lasting impact on the community.

The pandemic was a pivotal moment for MYLC. Meeting indoors and in close proximity was no longer an option, so MYLC had to learn to take risks. Executive and general meetings were conducted through zoom, and volunteer events were done outdoors. In fact, MYLC had major successes during the pandemic era ranging from a Book and Toy Drive to fundraise for the UNC Medical Center and a Car Wash to fundraise for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The transition into and out of this time was one that the council was not prepared for, but able to tackle because as a community, anything can be done!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

In 2013, young Akhila had a deep desire and goal to provide strong youth involvement and true leadership in her community. With this new spark of passion, Akhila and a group of like-minded individuals worked relentlessly to make their vision a reality, even registering their potential organization as a 501(c)(3). Their hard work eventually led to the moment when they presented their ideas to the Mayor of Morrisville. Impressed by their initiative and goals, the Mayor offered his support, and with that, the Morrisville Youth Leadership Council was born. This marked the beginning of an inspiring organization with a mission to make a lasting, meaningful impact on the community.

MYLC started off small, with few members and little community visibility, but soon our efforts caught traction. We started partnering with local businesses and non-profits for events, held successful fundraisers that raised thousands of dollars and gradually became noticed within our community. This growth inspired us to even further expand our mission, as we secured an official partnership with the Town Of Morrisville in 2017 that allowed us to reach a level of audience that skyrocketed our members and provided us with opportunities to significantly contribute to annul Morrisville events such as Christmas Tree Lighting, Trick or Treat Trail, Holi, etc.

Recently, MYLC has been focused on organizing and hosting a diverse range of events for our members every month, from book sorting and agricultural work to sports events and more. These variety of activities are designed to offer our members a broad perspective on the community while helping them develop important long-lasting values and skills. As we continue to expand, there is much thrill about the upcoming collaborative projects and events we have in the works.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As I reflect on the journey of the Morrisville Youth Leadership Council, I can confidently say that the three qualities that have been the driving forces behind our growth and success is teamwork, communication and passion. These core elements not only helped us build a solid foundation but also allowed us to overcome challenges and progressively improve and learn from our mistakes over time.

When MYLC first began, we were a small group of individuals with big ideas. The biggest lesson we learned early on was that teamwork is everything. We realized that no one can do it alone. Whether it was planning an event, brainstorming ideas or figuring out how to reach out to the community. For those just starting my advice is simple, surround yourself with people who complement your skills and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Collaboration allows everyone to bring their strengths to the table, and it often leads to ideas and results that are far greater than what any one person could accomplish alone.

Equally important is communication because at the beginning, we knew we had to get the word out about MYLC and engage the community. But we quickly discovered that communication isn’t just about spreading information, it’s about making connections. Whether it was communicating within the event team, with local businesses, or with the members, clear and open communication was the key to building trust, avoiding misunderstandings and gaining momentum, allowing us to avoid numerous unnecessary issues.

Passion is the spark that ignites everything we do. From the moment MYLC was born, there was an energy that fueled us, a strong desire for making a difference in our community. It was that enthusiasm that carried us through the long hours and the challenges. Passion is what made us keep improving and pushing forward with purpose. Our advice to you is very simple, hold onto your passion like it’s your secret weapon. Let it drive you, but also keep it grounded. Passion can inspire those around you, attract others to your cause and keep you interested in what you do regardless of the difficulty.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

At MYLC, we are always looking to partner and collaborate with like-minded organizations and local businesses who share our passion and drive for community involvement. Specifically, we are interested in collaborating with student-made organizations and local restaurants or businesses that are prepared to support fundraising events and help create an environment that lights up everybody’s mood.

Here, at MYLC we also support our local community events with volunteering opportunities for our members, ensuring the entirety of the event functions smoothly and according to plan. So, if you are searching for recurring or one-time volunteering support, or if you’d like to work together on developing fundraising plans, please let us know! We’re excited to brainstorm with you and come up with ways to make a bigger impact.
