We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Moses Lawi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Moses with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that my strong work ethic is deeply rooted in the example set by my father. He embodies dedication and resilience, never taking a day off unless he’s grappling with illness or confronting a family emergency. Watching him pour his heart and soul into his work has inspired me immensely.
My family’s journey to the U.S. was filled with hardships and challenges that shaped my perspective on effort and perseverance. We faced numerous struggles that tested our strength and unity, and those experiences imparted valuable lessons about the importance of hard work.
As I continue to move forward in life and grow older, I feel my resolve only grows stronger. The realization that no one is coming to rescue me has instilled a sense of independence in me. I’ve come to accept that life can be demanding and that I am responsible for my own path.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a filmmaker, director, and writer living in Los Angeles. Over the past few years of my filmmaking career, I have shown a strong commitment to storytelling that resonates with audiences. My films bring unique narratives to life, and my work has been recognized for its depth and authenticity, establishing me as a promising talent in the film industry. I am a storyteller who has directed many short films and won several awards. My goal now is to ensure that nothing stands in the way of my ambitions and the destination I am heading towards.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first of three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in my journey is my work ethic. I take pride in my willingness to get my hands dirty when needed, and I push myself every day to improve.
Second, I would say my desire to connect with people who share the same passions and goals as I do has been crucial. Being surrounded by like-minded, driven individuals inspires me to strive for success.
The third quality I value is a willingness to learn. It’s okay not to know everything, and asking questions is essential. I believe that if we all knew everything, there wouldn’t be much left to explore or enjoy in life.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Coming from a cultural background like mine, parents typically only allow their children to choose careers like doctor, engineer, or lawyer—professions they believe will provide a sustainable lifestyle. However, I’m grateful that my parents encouraged me to choose my own path. Even though I decided to pursue a career as an artist, I appreciate the freedom my parents gave me to follow my dreams.
