Meet Mothers of Mayhem

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mothers of Mayhem. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Mothers of, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Being in a band is risky. You stand up on stage in front of people. It requires vulnerability and sharing a piece of your self that could very well be rejected, which is a big risk. From the start, we decided take the leap before really looking. We jumped in as a band, without overthinking and didn’t allow ourselves the opportunity to back down from the risk or even really recognize the risk at that point. Sometimes you have to think less and not overcomplicate things, but if it feels right, you follow that path. As we started moving forward, we became aware of more of the risk involved, but we also knew that in order to push ourselves we would need to accept gigs we didn’t’ feel ready to play and perform songs we may not have been totally ready to perform yet. We knew if we waited until we felt completely ready and comfortable -we would still be waiting.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We are a rock quartet hailing from northern Utah in the Ogden valley and we know what it’s like to light up a crowd. Playing festivals and fairs in multiple states around the west with a mix of originals and covers, audiences walk away with huge smiles on their faces, amazed by our shared experience, drawing in and keeping the crowd dancing and singing along. We are classically and formally trained musicians, playing hits that rock fans will love, combine with an eccentric mix of our own fun, fast originals. Don’t let the skirts and petticoats fool you, our sound is much heavier and louder than you might expect. We are working on more original music, our newest single, “Say yes!” was released in May 2023 and is available on all streaming platforms. We also completed our first music video to another original song, “Elijah Jones”, last fall and it can be found on YouTube ( https://youtu.be/pAmh5VjPwnU ) and we have a fun and full Summer and Fall show schedule to close out 2023.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important qualities we have come to recognize as a skill is our ability to work with each other, and other people. Because of our various relationships within our own families, jobs, etc., we have more experience and have developed the ability to manage and resolve conflict in a kind and productive way. You can know your instrument inside and out, but if you can’t work with people and solve problems you’re greatly limiting how far you can go.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
We don’t think there’s a right or wrong approach, because there are benefits to both ways. As a collective group we have been more inclined to work towards development and improvement of skills that felt more uncomfortable or less natural for each of us to dive into. In doing so, we have become stronger collectively, but also as individuals and it’s lead to the discovery of how much more capable we are than we had previously realized. While music is obviously at the forefront of our skill set, we realized that if we only focused on that one piece, that everything else we wanted to develop as a band ( such as showmanship, creating original music, and building our brand) would fall by the wayside.
