Meet Moxie

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Moxie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Moxie, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

When you start seeing the world as art you start seeing all the aspects it offers. Creativity is all around us if we look for it. From the colors of the sky, to the music we hear passing a club on Red River. Creativity will stay alive because it’s all around us and it’s constant. And I use that creativity to impact my drag and my performances. Just have fun with it! Anything can be creative!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My name is Moxie!!
I started drag January 2023 at Cheer Up Charlie’s participating in their open stage night, Big Tits Bigger Dreams. That day changed my life forever. I found my love for performing, I found community, and I found myself. I came out as a transgender woman shortly after starting drag.
I started doing drag more often, popping up here and there, gaining knowledge every time I performed. I learned how to talk on a mic, I learned how to host. All things needed to get me to my next big thing. Little did I know, that next big thing was opening and hosting for Chappell Roan November 2023. After that night I knew this was the path I wanted to stay on.
And I decided to get better every time I got in drag after that. Drag is my future. And no law or bill will stop me from being myself.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three C’s.
Community, Compassion, and Communication.
Community is so important, for drag and anyone in the LGBTQIA+. To have a great support system will take you far.
Having compassion allows you to not just do something for yourself but for others. We are a community, and sometimes our community needs help.
Lastly communication. To speak up when our community is being attacked. To speak out when someone needs help. To just speak to the audience so they get to know you. Our voices are powerful. Never be afraid to use them.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

I would say my drag mother, Brigitte Bandit, has played a big role in helping me get to where I am today. It was her show that I started drag at. She taught me how to host and speak on the mic. She even picked me up and took me to my very first protest here in Austin. She not only showed me how to be a better performer but also how to be a better person. She wants the best for everyone. And I am so proud to call her my drag mother.
