Mrs. Kiara , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

When facing the formidable challenge of being the only one in the room who looks like me, I’ve learned to transform the weight of that solitude into a source of strength and resilience. Rather than succumb to the discomfort of being ‘the only,’ I’ve harnessed the power of representation, using it as a catalyst for meaningful change and progress.

In those solitary moments, I’ve discovered the profound impact of my voice, my perspective, and my presence. Rather than shrinking into the background, I’ve courageously spoken up, amplifying the voices of those underrepresented and championing diversity, equity, and inclusion. I’ve endeavored to be a beacon of empowerment, striving to inspire and uplift others while navigating uncharted territory with grace and determination.

Through this journey, I’ve honed the ability to fully embrace my individuality and authenticity, recognizing the unique value I bring to the table. By doing so, I have opened new doors, shattered barriers, and set a powerful precedent for future generations. Every uncharted path I tread and every barrier I break emboldens the next person who looks like me, fostering a legacy of progress, possibility, and empowerment.

As the only one in the room, I’ve cultivated an unwavering resolve to carve out space, influence positive change, and ultimately redefine the narrative, ensuring that the room transforms into an inclusive and representative space for all. My journey in these spaces has become a testament to the enduring power of resilience, and a testament to the extraordinary impact that can be forged by embracing one’s uniqueness in the face of adversity.

Looking back on my journey, I believe that tenacity, resilience, and a strong work ethic have been the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have guided my path to success. These fundamental pillars have served as the bedrock of my achievements, enabling me to navigate through adversity, overcome obstacles, and consistently drive towards excellence.

For individuals who are in the early stages of their journey, my advice is to actively cultivate and refine these attributes. Foster a spirit of tenacity – the unwavering determination to pursue your goals and persist in the face of challenges. Embrace resilience – the ability to adapt, learn from setbacks, and bounce back stronger than before. Cultivate a strong work ethic – the commitment to dedicate yourself fully to your endeavors, to consistently strive for improvement, and to bring your best efforts to everything you do.

One of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom from “Daring Greatly” is the concept of embracing vulnerability as a source of strength and authenticity. Brown’s teachings emphasize the transformative power of vulnerability in fostering genuine connections, resilience, and personal growth. Embracing vulnerability has allowed me to cultivate empathy, build meaningful relationships, and approach challenges with courage and openness.
