Meet Murlonda Janelle

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Murlonda Janelle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Murlonda, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
During my years in Elementary School I did not like to read. It was during the summer going into middle school that my mom challenged me to read more. That summer I found my love of reading and have been reading tons of books since. Currently, I have four nephews and wanted to make sure they had at least an appreciation of reading so I sought out to find books that they could relate to. There was nothing, that I found, that had books that looked like them in their everyday appearance and I’ve always heard that when you don’t find what you’re looking for you make it. So my author journey includes writing books with characters that look like them and the twist is that my stories is teaching them valuable life lessons that I feel are important to keep with them forever.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
During the day I work at a local Credit Union where I am the VP of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. My work involves making sure people make a conscious effort to uncover the unconscious biases we all have. My work as an author involves making sure boys are represented in books as their true selves. I love spreading the message that boys read when we give them books to read. My book series is entitled “Playing With Angels” and my goal is to write at least two other books to include in this series.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important things that I have learned in my journey are marketing is very important. Continue to advertise in some way everywhere you go and have your products on you. Another thing I’ve learned is to follow and study someone who is in the field you are in. It is okay to watch someone in the same field, why recreate the wheel? The third thing i’ve learned is that you must stay a forever student in your field. Continue to learn so that you can continue to improve.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me to figure things out. The skills required to learn and develop the necessary skills to complete tasks has taken me very far in life. It has made me more independent and how to be self sufficient.
