We were lucky to catch up with Murray Sawchuck recently and have shared our conversation below.
Murray, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
If you want to be successful you have to take RISKS. If you don’t you will not push the boundaries of things you don’t even know you’re capable of. Risks put you outside of your boundaries and make you strive for something better. It’s easy to get a 9 to 5 job, stay in your lane and live a simple life and that works for many, but if you are an entrepreneur you are looking for that golden egg or the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I worked for over 18 different companies from the age of 11 – 19 back in Vancouver, Canada but every time I was working whether if be cooking fish and chips, delivering news paper, being a lifeguard or fixing bikes, I always thought, I COULD OWN THIS STORE and do better, make more and have more control over my life and finances, that’s how I developed my ability for risks… I wanted a better life for me!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a Las Vegas Headliner for 23 years on the Las Vegas Strip and it feels like it has only been a blink of an eye! Growing up in Burnaby, BC (Vancouver – Canada) Las Vegas was only a dream as that’s where all the big stars went to play from Frank Sinatra to Siegfried and Roy. I have been on stage since the age of 5 where I was a dancer, then musician and then finally into magic, and magic is what stuck with me.
I worked hard honing my craft and trying to be different and unique so I had an angle to get booked and stand out. My main goal when I have always walked on stage is to ENTERTAIN. My slogan for years was “Don’t Fool Them… Entertain Them!” It still rings true nowadays.
My main focus now is getting on more and more TV Shows and making my brand recognized worldwide.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities for me were to always be open to criticism from my peers who have already made it and listen to how they became successful. Also be open to new ideas or doing things and do be set in your ways as it will only limit you. One last thing is be open to what is NOW and how people live life now, so you don’t get stuck in time. It’s important to keep relevant and be open to new things that are going on in your line of work so you are at least educated.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was to let me experience and learn various things growing up the instant I showed an interest in something from sports and hobbies to jobs and life experiences. They really let me try everything I showed an interest and so I would be well rounded and could figure what I really liked or didn’t care for. My mother and father Arlene and John Sawchuk were super supportive of choices as well as wise and shared what they thought might be good for me and my visions.
