We recently connected with Myer Krah and have shared our conversation below.
Myer, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I broke the mirror. I spent so much time taking a look in the mirror pointing out my imperfections that I never took a step forward or finished anything I started for fear of failure or not being perfect. Yet each time I did complete a creative task or project, there was always someone there that appreciated my work. Someone who saw my work from a different angle or perspective, someone who wasn’t looking for perfection. When I figuratively “broke the mirror”, I saw myself from many different perspectives through those shards of glass starting back at me. I realized the beauty wasn’t in perfection. If I just finished, there would be someone, somewhere to appreciate my work and it starts with me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Fatherhood Advocate and I encourage fathers to stay the course through conversations around parenting. Sometimes these conversations are the more challenging kind, including topics like forgiveness, parenting after divorce & mental health and other times they include parental comedic relief, parenting triumphs and story telling. While deployed over seas in the Pacific, operational stress took over my mental health and I stopped speaking to everyone I cared for and who cared about me. I tried my best to deal with my stressors alone and it was only driving me deeper into a depression. My spouse understood how much speaking and communicating would do for me, so she introduced the idea of podcasting, even if I didn’t publish a second of it. I thought it was silly at first until I was able to get a few things off of my chest and out of my mind with a mic and headset present. After recognizing what I was most passionate about; fatherhood, I decided to start reaching out to close friends who were fathers and I realized many of us had never taken the time to talk about how this new life of fatherhood was effecting us. The goal in those conversations were not to teach them how to parent correctly but to create a safe space to speak freely about how we felt and navigated the space of fatherhood. Some of these conversations included our relationships with our own fathers. It was a hit, and it only made me more passionate about the work. Since then I have collaborated with the National Parents Organization, created community events to allow dads to lead the charge in fun family activities and lead small groups to talk about challenging trials in parenting. My goal is to become a full time Father Advocate, bringing awareness to the challenges of fatherhood and encouraging everyone to strengthen the relationships between children and their parents.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Communication: Learn how to speak to anyone, no matter their background.
Questioning Attitude: Lean in to the part you don’t understand, that’s where the gold is.
Be kind: You never know who’s watching.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am constantly looking to network and collaborate with new people. At one point in my life I didn’t understand how powerful it was, now it’s everything. Anyone with a platform with ears to hear and eyes to see I can work with. In the past I have worked with organizational leaders who need a speaker or a group to volunteer, I have spoke on many podcast and panels and I would love to collaborate with media creatives who have their own artistic vision and likes to add it to places in different spaces.
